He had the glove in his hand. “Training,” he said. “I don’t fight. Not anymore.”

She frowned as if she hadn’t known he did at all. Must be Raina never mentioned it and it was probably for the best. Or maybe she thought it had more to do with him being a kid and the competitions he was in. It hadn’t come up that he actually fought but rather trained MMA fighters.

“Hmm,” she said. Her eyes were looking him over. He didn’t have a shirt on. He normally didn’t when he was in the ring, as it got in the way. He did have compression shorts on under his longer athletic ones, but they still didn’t reach his knees.

“See something you like?” he asked without thought and couldn’t believe he’d done that.

“Maybe,” she said, throwing his word back in his face from the other night. Okay, this was getting interesting.

He nodded his head. “You’ll have to excuse me. I’ve got to finish up in the back. I shouldn’t be long.”

“Meaning you want me to stay?”

“Meaning I won’t be long,” he said. Two could play at the teasing game.

Megan hadto pop her eyes back in her sockets and swallow a few times. She was pretty sure there was drool in her mouth and it might have been dribbling out the corner of her lips.

Oh. My. God. No man should be built like Jonah Davenport. And he walked around the gym like a Greek god statue erected in his honor. It was a wonder women weren’t throwing themselves at him begging for a moment of his time.

“Hi.”

She turned to look at the woman that climbed on the treadmill next to her. Someone with a simple sports bra and shorts on. The woman had one hell of a body on her that looked like she put a lot of time into it.

Megan wasn’t sure she’d ever be able to have muscles like that. Nor was she sure she’d want them.

“Hello,” she said.

“I’m Jill. It’s nice to see another woman in here at this time of the night.”

She’d noticed Jill on the weights earlier and being spotted by the guy working the counter. Yeah, not her. She wanted to do her thing. Maybe she’d try the machines at some point, when it was slower and she could watch enough people doing it that she could figure it out herself.

“It’s my first time here,” Megan said. “I thought I’d start on the cardio.”

“That is probably why Jonah was talking to you then,” Jill said.

“Oh?” she asked. Might as well see if she could get some information here.

“Yeah. He may walk around like a dog with two dicks on a superyacht and the women all want his attention and he’s nice and polite. He’s not doing much with anyone unless they hire him as a trainer. But if there is someone new, he will come over and introduce himself.”

She didn’t want to lie. “I’m friends with Jonah’s sister. We know each other. He was coming to say hi.”

“Makes sense,” Jill said. “He did seem more relaxed. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen him talk to someone new without a shirt on.”

Okay. This was getting better. “I did wave to him when he came out. He’s in the back with someone, he said.”

Jill nodded and turned the treadmill on and started running at a fast clip. Megan felt a little inferior but knew if she tried to run she’d fall flat on her face and embarrass herself. Better to stick to what she knew best and felt comfortable with.

“He’s back there a lot during the week at night. That is when he’s training the fighters. Hours on end. Sometimes on the weekends too.”

“Is he the only trainer?”

“No. There are a lot of part-timers here. Jonah will be out here helping people too, but mostly he spends his time in the back when he’s not watching the desk. I’ve been coming here for years. I think I see less and less of him, to be honest, because he’s in such demand for one-on-ones.”

“That’s great,” Megan said. She realized luck or fate might have been on her side then to have seen him and she could have just been wasting her time trying to get his attention.

She’d seen the smirk on his face when she’d thrown his words back at him. They seemed to have this game going that was fun.
