“Thanks, Raina,” he said, grimacing. “Just what I need. My girlfriend thinking I’m going to start giving her flowers and candlelit dinners. Not happening.”

Raina smiled. “You called her your girlfriend.”

He rolled his eyes. It slipped out, but he supposed that would be what they were considered. “Why did you say I was sensitive?”

“I think it had more to do with you being a protector. She wasn’t surprised to hear it.”

“Not sure what about me screams I’m not one,” he said, not knowing where this was all going.

“Jonah, she is going to get crapped on at her family gathering tomorrow. She always does. I’m sure she won’t tell me everything, but she’ll leave it feeling like a failure and I hate that.”

He knew where this was going. “So you think I need to cheer her up?”

“You’ll do what you want. I’m only telling you I know exactly what is going to happen tomorrow.”

“Thanks,” he said. “I’ll make sure I check in on her then.”

“I asked when you guys were going to let Mom and Dad know.”

“We just let you know. It’s not a major announcement or anything,” he argued.

“Really?” Raina asked with her hands on her hips. “Because I remember when you found out about Cody you needed to be there to meet him. And you didn’t crack a grin for a long time.”

He remembered that meeting and smiled this time. “I had to let him know not to mess you up.”

“Or you’d mess him up,” Raina said. “I get it. Sometimes your bark is worse than your bite.”

He wasn’t so sure of that. Maybe most people looked at him and backed off because of his size and personality as it was, but he could put the power behind his words too.

“Only with you,” he said, lightly punching her arm.

“I’m sure with Megan too.”

“I’m pretty honest with her,” he said.

“You’re honest with everyone. I told her I only want you both happy. I think you’ll be good for each other. You could stand someone to make you smile more and not be so serious and she could stand to be with someone to encourage her to not give a shit about other people.”

He laughed. No one could say he ever worried about what other people thought of him. “Glad to know you feel that way. Now it’s between us. And Raina, it’s been a few dates. I think you’re getting way too serious yourself.”

“She told me she couldn’t wait any longer but didn’t know the right time to say anything either, but once the deed was done…” He cringed and she laughed at him. “Don’t worry, that is all she said. I knew what she was saying. My point is, I’m glad she told me. I would have been upset if she’d waited any longer.”

“It was better coming from her than me, right?”

He wanted that verified so he could prove Trent wrong.

“Totally. If you told me I’d be upset Megan didn’t feel she could come to me. And if you came together I would have felt like I couldn’t be as open with her as I was.”

“Yes,” he said, making a fist. “Trent can eat it.”

Raina lifted an eyebrow. “Megan said Trent knew. What can he eat?”

“He said I needed to go with Megan so she wasn’t alone. Like she needed support to talk to you. I said exactly what you said. Now I can tell Trent he doesn’t know it all even with that fancy law degree.”

Raina shook her head. “I’ll let you get back to whatever you’re doing tonight.” She got up and hugged him. “I really am happy to hear this news. I told Megan I don’t want any awkwardness between us, but you can trust her to not tell me anything private.”

“I didn’t think she would,” he said, but he was happy to have that verified too.
