“It’s so good to see you again, Megan.”

“What? Not me?” Jonah asked his mother.

They’d just walked into his parents' house for Sunday dinner when his mother made the comment. His parents knew he’d been dating Megan for weeks now, but it’d taken almost a month for him to find a Sunday afternoon free.

He only had it free because weeks ago his mother wanted them to get together and he couldn’t find time and said he’d free up a day and not fill it with appointments. From that point on he decided to keep his Sundays open to give that time to Megan.

This was the first one he had and he hoped to continue to do it.

“It’s always good to see my firstborn, but I talk to you too.”

He snorted and moved past his mother and into the kitchen. Megan followed him and then stopped when he went to get a beer. He knew he’d need it. They were the first ones here, but his siblings would be along soon enough.

“Aren’t you going to ask Megan if she wants anything?” his father said from his place in the living room.

“Sorry,” he said. “Do you want a beer? I know you don’t really drink it. My mother has wine, I’m sure. She likes her wine.”

“Not funny, Jonah.”

He shrugged. “I’ve seen you throw a lot back.”

“Only when I’m stressing over my kids,” his mother said.

“Good thing I’m the only kid that never caused you any stress,” Trent said, walking into the room. “Being the middle child has its perks for once.”

His mother laughed. “Don’t be so sure about that, Trent. Megan, can I get you a glass of wine? I can open it now if you’d like.”

“I’m good,” she said. “I’ll just take water for now. Maybe with dinner I’ll have a glass.”

“See,” he said. “Even Megan knows it’s too early for wine, Mom. Why would you ask?”

His mother moved over and pinched his arm. “I see my son is trying to show the little humor he has. I always told him he tried too hard.”

“He has his moments,” Megan said.

“You don’t do too much complaining,” he said.

She smiled at him. One that reached her eyes and he was happy to see it there. Just like he’d been happy to see it whenever they spent time together because he knew it wasn’t as much as he wished.

Though she didn’t seem to have an issue with it. Or if she did, she wasn’t saying. He should be happy about that, but he wondered if she kept it in like Raina said Megan did a lot in her life with her family.

To the point, her family still didn’t know they were dating and he was curious when she’d tell them.

“What can I say?” she said. “You’ve got other good traits.”

He almost felt his face blush and some pink might have come into his cheeks because Trent started to laugh at him.

“The fact that you can make the big man blush, Megan, is a feat in itself.”

“Jonah is blushing?” Cody asked when he came into the room. “Wow, Megan. Good job.”

“Asshole,” he told his brother-in-law.

“He’s not afraid of you,” Raina said.

“I’m not so sure about that,” Cody said. “I wouldn’t want to meet him in the alley unless he was on my side.”

“He’s always been on anyone’s side in this room,” his mother said. “It’s a nice day out. Do you mind sitting on the deck? I can bring the snacks out there.”
