“Got any aspirin?” he asked Megan quietly.

“Yeah. In my purse. Are you okay?”

“Just have the start of a headache,” he said.

He was hoping to push it off, but something told him that might not be the case. He didn’t have his migraine meds on him either. He kept some at the gym and at home and that was about it. If he felt the signs of one coming on, he took one and would normally be fine.

Tonight was going to be a gamble.

Megan pulled out two aspirin and he took them with her soda. He wasn’t even going to finish the beer he had at this point. Not that there was much left.

But an hour later they were calling it a night. His sister and Megan were having a ball and he hadn’t wanted to be the downer of the night out.

They were in his truck driving home. “Are you okay?” Megan asked him. “Is your head any better?”

“No,” he said. “I need one of my pills and I didn’t have it with me.”

“Why didn’t you say anything?” she asked. “We could have left. Raina would have understood.”

“I don’t need her to know I still get them. I haven’t in a while. I think it was the lights. If I’d known that was going to happen I would have brought one with me.”

“I want you to give me one if you can, to keep in my purse so that you have it. Most times if you aren’t home or the gym you are with me.”

He turned his head. “Thanks for that. Now I’ll know. I’ll take it as soon as we get home.”

“And you’re going right to bed,” she said.

“I need to. Sorry the night is ending this way.”

“Don’t be sorry. Are you sure you can drive?” she asked.

“We are almost home. It’s not bad yet, but it’s going to be. I know it.” Which sucked more because he knew what he was in for at this point. Stupid pride on his part for biting his tongue.

He parked outside his place and they went in. He grabbed one of the packets with the pill in it and downed a full glass of water with it.

“What can I do for you?” she asked.

“Nothing. I need to sleep it off.”

“Then we’ll go to bed. You get ready first and I’ll come in when you’re done.”

“Are you sure?” he asked.

“Positive.”

He went to the bathroom and brushed his teeth and peed. He couldn’t even have the light on it was bothering him so much and did it all by the nightlight. Yeah, he was dreading this.

Five minutes later he was crawling in bed with the lights off and pulling the covers over his head praying he got through the night and woke up in one piece so that Megan didn’t have to see him like this.

Keeping It To Himself

Megan barely slept last night.

She’d noticed that Jonah hadn’t looked good but didn’t say anything. Part of her wondered if it was the lighting at the bowling alley making her see something that wasn’t there. But when he asked her for aspirin she started to wonder if he was keeping it to himself, what was really going on.

If he didn’t look like shit when they got back to his place she would have yelled at him for trying to be a hero in front of his sister.
