“It’s so right,” John said. “You know it and I know it.”

“Wish I knew that before I issued the challenge,” Megan said. “But there were things you couldn’t do, so I still got you.”

“Talk about being competitive,” he said, tugging on a lock of her hair.

“Jami, is there anything I can help you do?” she asked. The timer had just gone off in the kitchen.

“I’m going to pull out some snacks that I had warming. Why don’t you just sit and enjoy yourselves. When dinner is ready we can make a mad rush to get it all on the table, but for now enjoy the game and the food.”

“Are you going to see Ryder and Marissa today?” she asked Raina and Cody.

She knew how close Cody was to his sister and niece and nephew. Cody had given up his life in Greenville, South Carolina, to move here by Marissa. He hadn’t wanted Marissa and Tommy to not have any family close by.

Again, Megan wasn’t sure anyone in her family would do that for her.

“We’re going to Diane’s for dessert,” Cody said.

“We are taking home some of Mom’s dessert though,” Raina said. “I want a piece of cherry pie and no one makes it like she does.”

“My mother is a good cook too,” Megan said. “I think my sisters are bringing the desserts. Emily is the baker of the two, as Tom has a sweet tooth.”

Her sister did cater to her husband. That was Emily’s life, not hers. You’d think Tom would be nicer since he had dinner on the table daily and dessert half the time.

“Do you bake?” Jonah asked her. “You haven’t made much for me along those lines.”

“And she shouldn’t have to either,” Jami said. “You aren’t home enough for her to do those things for you. I wouldn’t want to have dinner on the table that late.”

She laughed when Jonah frowned. “I didn’t say that Megan had to. I’ve never asked that of you and I wouldn’t.”

Megan put her head on his shoulder. “If you got home at a decent hour, then I would. But yes, I don’t want to eat that late. I have to cook for myself half the time, so I’d do it for you too.”

Trent laughed. “See, not for you. For her and she adds you to it.”

“I can cook myself,” he argued. “I’ve been doing it for years. Do I look like I need someone to cook for me or that I eat a lot of fast food or takeout?”

She ran her hands on his bicep. “You look really good and you eat boring food to get that.”

“He does,” Raina said. “I’ve seen it before. He eats a lot of chicken and turkey when he cooks himself.”

“Lean protein,” he said. “It’s easy to have left over. I didn’t know I was going to be criticized. What do you eat, Trent?”

“Pizza, burgers and anything else the assistants bring into the office,” Trent said, grinning. “I inhale it too while I think of you with your boring chicken.”

“I eat that stuff at times too, but there is a reason people’s eyes go to me and not you when we walk in a room,” he said.

“Boys,” Jami said. “I’ve heard this or conversations like this from the moment Trent could talk and start in with you, Jonah. Don’t you know he does it on purpose?”

“Yep,” Jonah said. “Which is why I give it right back.”

“My sisters are like this too,” Megan said. “Though I think they are serious and not joking.”

“I’m serious,” Trent said. “I don’t joke about food.”

He proved it by filling his plate full of the snacks his mother brought out. Jonah did the same and she looked at Raina and saw her shake her head. “I’ve watched this my whole life. They will make each other sick trying to out eat the other.”

“See,” John said. “Competition. Anything Jonah can compete against, he does.”

“I’ll never challenge him again,” she said.
