“I’m okay,” she said. “Everything hurts.”

“Did the doctor explain?”

“She poisoned me,” she said. “I was carrying your baby, and she poisoned me.”

“Patricia … she must have really hated me. I had no idea. I swear, Alicia, I never would have let you see her if I’d known what she was planning.”

“If I’d told you what happened the day she came to see me,” said Alicia, “I would have known. We could have stopped this.”

I nodded.

“But,” said Alicia, “then again, there’s only one reason I’m here right now instead of home, where I should be.”

I waited to hear her answer, though I dreaded it, knowing what she was about to say.

“It’s you, Jake.”

In the deathly silence that followed, I felt my heart break. It started as a dull pain in my chest, but in the days which followed, the pain would consume me.

“You didn’t tell me the truth about what was happening. You lied to me. About Dr. Patricia Knightly. About all of it.”

I couldn’t say anything.

“Why didn’t you tell me, Jake?” There were tears forming on her cheeks. “I could have died.”

“I … I don’t … I’m sorry,” I said. Emotion had overcome me, to the point where I could hardly speak.

“You let your past get in the way of everything. Spoil everything. It didn’t have to be like this.”

“I know. I was afraid of losing you and never being able to regain your trust. But Alicia, I’m going to change. I promise you. I’m going to be better. So much better. I just need you to trust me. And I need your help.”

Alicia turned and looked away, out the window.

“I don’t think I can trust you anymore.”

“What are you saying?”

“You’re dangerous, Jake. You put me in danger because you were too afraid to tell me the truth. How could I love someone who …”

She was choked up and couldn’t continue.

“What happens now?”

“Now?” Alicia closed her eyes. “Now, I’m going to rest.”

“And what about me?”

She looked at me again.

“You?”

She looked away.

“Go.” That was all she said. The last words I’d ever hear.

I stood and left. In the corridor, I said nothing to Sam.

“I’m going,” I said. I felt it. I felt like I was fading away after what Alicia had said to me. I was completely empty. Nothing more to say.
