Bishop

I gruntand double over as the baton slams into my stomach. Pain explodes through my core. It’s actually surprising to me. Because at this point in the interrogation, I thought I was numb from the beat down.

Guess not.

“Nothing personal, Bishop.” The baton slams me in the gut again, and I growl. That’s the other surprise: the guy beating the shit out of me is Marvin. So much for being a straight and narrow guy. And I guess I know how he made lieutenant now.

He hits me again. I grunt, and I hear Tanner swearing from across the room.

“Fuck you!” My buddy roars. “Pussy piece of shit! How about you let him out of those handcuffs and we see how this fight goes!”

An older voice chuckles from behind me.

“Where would be the fun in that?”

Chief Millbrook steps around past me. I look up at him with a glare, just in time to realize Kip Clausterman is here with him. Gee, I wonder why. Millbrook grins down at me.

“Cause we’re just having fun, now aren’t we?”

“Loads,” I mutter.

His smile thins. “You know what this is about, don’t you, Officer Leer?”

“I know you’re a crooked piece of trash,” I growl.

He chuckles. “You don’t know shit, Bishop.”

“And I know you’re gonna score a murder charge.”

He tries to give me a blank “what are you talking about” face, but he sucks at it. I’ve played at poker tables with this dumb shit a few years in a row at the annual police gala event. And Tom’s poker face is a fucking joke. Plus, he’s already tipped his hand. We know he knows about Cora and possibly the tape by breaking down Rowan’s door coming for us.

“You know what I’m talking about, you fucking prick,” I grunt.

He shrugs. “I know our forensics say you lied about that shootout at the Kenner estate. And I know this piece of shit was there too,” he growls, turning to jab a finger at Tanner.

Tom turns back. “So, this is how this is going to play out.” He and Marvin turn and grin at each other. Then he looks back at me. “I’m sorry to say, I’m not going to be catching any sort of murder charge, Bishop.”

Tanner snorts a laugh. “I got bad news for you, you fucking—”

“But you two are.”

I freeze, my eyes narrowing. “That so? Who did we murder? Your cartel friends?”

He gives me the same shitty poker face. “Cartel friends? No, no-no-no,” he grins. “I’m not talking about gang bangers or low lifes.”

“Then who,” I grunt.

Tom smiles thinly. “Your little slut, that’s who.”

I see fucking red. I roar, and Tanner does the same. We both make a lunge at the three of them. But we’re shackled at the ankles and wrists and chained to the floor of the interrogation room. We both stumble and fall right over. Tom and his little lackies just start laughing.

“See, here’s how this is working out,” Tom sneers. “You two were pulling a drug deal at the Kenner mansion, since you knew it was empty. Shit went bad, your cartel buddies started shooting, and you shot back. But, turns out you had someone watching, didn’t you? Weren’t expecting Lorretta’s niece, were you?”

My face pales. Oh shit…

Tom grins. “Oh I know who that little bitch is. But so did you. Which is why you both tracked her down, took her to Rowan Tramble’s beach shack—” His smile widens when he sees my surprise.
