Girls’ night sounds better and better. If for no other reason but to keep my mind busy.

“So girls’ night?” She brightens again.

Heaven help me. I squint one-eyed while I ask for my preference. “Staying in?”

“Don’t be silly.” She frowns at me as she takes off her backpack and moves into the kitchen, like she’s been here a million times. “We’re going out, duh.”

I could never make myself so easily at home. Maybe I’m jealous of her. Not her relationship with Ben. He deserves good and happy things in his life. He’s my friend and I want that for him.

It’s how at ease Dizzy is no matter where she is that makes me a little bitter. She just jumps in… whereas I’m still peeling myself away from the wall most of the time. Trying to let down my guard when everything in me screams to keep it in place.

Except when I’m with Rogue. And then I can’t. And I want to freaking scream out loud.

She props the vintage Chanel backpack on a stool and pulls out a sexy pink two piece—the skirt is soooo short—before retrieving a bottle of vodka. “Have you got any juice or…”

“I think we have some pink lemonade.” I open the fridge, and sure enough we do, so I mix us both a drink.

“Thank you.” She reaches for the cup and drinks quickly. “Show me to your wardrobe. We need to pick out an outfit for you too.”

“What are we celebrating?” Adira asks as he steps into the kitchen. He’s exchanged denim shorts and flannel for black sequin hot pants, a tiny red halter, and his favorite gold knee high boots. He’s paired it with flame red curls and gold bangles. Chunky triangle hoops hang from his lobes.

It’s a super-hot look on him, but I get the sense that he’s having a fake it until he makes it moment after our discussion.

I wish I could just make it all go away for him. If only Christian hadn’t fallen off that roof. Because if that hadn’t happened, Alec would have nothing to hold over Adira. Or me.

He gives Dizzy the once over and points a red-dipped talon in her face. “I don’t know you, but I love your hair.”

“Dizzy.” She beams at him.

I don’t even understand how her cheeks don’t ache. If I smiled like that I’d probably pull all the muscles in my face. “Ben’s girlfriend.”

Adira bows over her hand. Flutters his lashes. “Enchanted.”

She laughs. “Would you like to join us?”

I roll my eyes.

“Oh, honey. I have plans. It’s karaoke night at Hoe House. But actually… you should come with. It’ll be fun.”

“Another time.” There is clearly something wrong with me that I find Dizzy too much if she even has my bestie wrapped around her little finger.

“Yes, absolutely. Another time.” Dizzy pours herself another drink. She makes a face when she realizes she forgot to put lemonade in it. Collecting mine, she pours more vodka and tops it up with the pink fizz. “Ivy and I are going to go dancing.”

“You’re going…dancing? At a straight club?” Adira narrows his gaze on me.

I take a sip of the drink Dizzy hands me. It burns like fire. My eyes water. “Mmhmm. Yes.”

“I almost wish I was going to see that.” Adira collects his wallet and keys off the counter and puts them in his clutch. “You two have fun.”

“What was that about?” Dizzy asks as Adira leaves.

“I don’t dance,” I admit. All those bodies, all those eyes. It’s just too much. I like my space and my dark corners that I can fade into. But maybe, I’m different now. Perhaps the dance floor isn’t so scary.

My heart palpitates. I’m pretty sure it disagrees.

Dizzy scoops up her bag and clothes with one hand, the drink still grasped in the other. “Which way to your wardrobe? Let’s find that smokin’ hot outfit.”

“This is it.” I thrust open the doors to Narnia.
