“Holy shit.” Dizzy gapes as she steps inside the costume wardrobe. Her eyes are as wide as the moon as she places her drink and bag on the console and heads directly toward the wall of shoes. “Are these all Lulu Blues?”

“Yes.”

“JDV special editions?” Her gaze bounces over the heels, never settling on anything. “LoLo Exxy boots? These are impossible to get in the stores.”

“Adira is well connected.” I find my phone where I left it on the console with the watches. Picking up the drawer, I put it back in its slot and lock it. Most of the pieces aren’t real, but the ones that are… they’re the level of valuable you don’t leave lying around. Then I pull up my chat bubble with Ben.

Me: You gave Dizzy my address? A heads up would have been nice.

“Oh my freaking God.” Her voice grows hushed as she stops in front of one particular pair of high tops. She touches the shoe with an almost religious devotion. “They only ever made one pair of these. Shouldn’t they be locked up in a vault or something?”

“Probably, but Adira likes his shoes right where he can see them.”

“Tell me you have laser beams installed like in the movies.”

“Sure.” I shrug. “Sharks with laser beams attached to their heads.”

“Huh?”

“Frickin’ laser beams,” I try.

“I don’t get it.” She stares blankly.

“One of Adira’s favorite classic movies.Austin Powers.”

“Oh. I haven’t seen it.” She fingers the sleeve of a chiffon yellow dress as she wanders past it. “You have to have security of some sort.”

“Sure.” I point at the cameras in the ceiling—the ones that don’t actually work—as I check my phone. If I hadn’t talked to Rebel earlier I really would assume my phone is broken.

“Great, because otherwise I would have to steal them.” Dizzy grins at me over her shoulder. “I do enjoy a challenge.”

“What is Ben doing while we’re doing this?” Because I am really surprised that he is not responding to my text. It’s like I’m blacklisted from technology. Even Nicole and Alec are silent. Not that I mind it at all. In fact I could get used to not hearing from them. “Maybe we should invite him along.”

“I don’t think so.” Something catches her eye and she crosses the wardrobe to pull out a red mini dress. “He’s visiting his dad for the weekend.”

“Oh.” I know his mom lives locally and his dad is in Chicago. I had no idea he was planning to go see his dad. “He didn’t tell me.”

She shrugs and holds the garment out to me. “I think you should wear this.”

I wore that dress the night Rogue and I ended up spending the night in the park. Even though I didn’t stick around until the next morning it will always be one of my favorite memories. He saw me and wanted me when I was too scared to be myself. He fought for me.

I glance at my phone. Where is he?

The dress still clutched in her hands, she stands close enough to peek at my device. “Is something wrong?”

Shit, when did she move? I turn my phone over in my hands. Hide the screen. “It’s nothing.”

“Oh, there’s a story here. I can feel it.” She snags another dress off the rack and holds it up to the red while she considers them both. Her gaze is shrewd as she puts the second dress back amongst its friends. “You have to tell me. Is it about you and Rogue?”

“It’s just…” I don’t know how to share my worry without sharing too much. “I think my service provider is lagging today. I haven’t heard from him.”

“Oh. I should probably have asked if the two of you had plans. Will he be okay with you hanging out with me?” She pulls her phone out of the back pocket of the tiny white denim skirt she’s paired with a blush pink cropped tank and holds it out to me. “You can use my phone. I don’t mind.”

“That’s okay.” I highly doubt Rogue would be happy with me giving out his number, even if I didn’t know that he was currently with his twin. And he certainly wouldn’t like the insinuation that he’d stop me from hanging out with my friends.

“Go on. Take it.” She pushes it closer.

I frown. Maybe, I could… no, I’m not going to put his number into a fan’s phone. I just don’t know her well enough to do that. Whatever is going on with Rogue… I just have to be patient. I give her my back while I put on my metaphorical bunny ears and pick up my drink. “I’m sure he’s just busy.”
