“Right. Why don’t you order some? You know what kind is best for them.”

My phone rings and I walk into the other room to answer it as she pulls her own phone from her pocket to order the puppy food.

“My wallets on the counter. Use my card to pay for it, ok?”

"Okay.” She calls as I walk out of the room.

I answer my phone. It’s just Bryson with a question about one of our clients. I hang up with him and head back to the kitchen to find Adeline there. She’s standing like she’s frozen as she holds my wallet.

Shit.

I know exactly what has caused that look.

CHAPTER 15

Adeline

I grabLincoln’s wallet from the counter, opening it to grab his credit card when I freeze. Inside his wallet is some cash and cards and… a picture of me from when I was younger. The air catches in my lungs.

Why does he have this? Where did he even get it? The picture is of Aspen and I when we first moved into our old apartment. I’m pretty sure we only had one copy of this picture so how does he have one?

My mind keeps jumping from one question to the next. I can’t focus on anything. I stand there frozen. What does this mean? He told me that he paid attention to me and at the time I just thought he meant he watched when we were together, but now? Is he stalking me? I never showed him this picture. He knew that you were looking for apartments, my mind whispers as more doubts flood me.

“Adeline?”

My eyes snap up to meet Lincoln’s as he walks towards me. I step back quickly, dropping his wallet between us.

“Let me explain, love. Please.” He says as he steps over it.

He doesn’t even glance at it as he steps over it.

“How? How did you get that picture? Why was it in your wallet? Are you stalking me? You said that you pay attention to me. Oh my god! What is going on?” I cry.

“I found it when I moved the rest of your stuff. I-, you just looked so beautiful, so happy. I’m sorry.”

I back up further and further and he keeps pace with me.

“Adeline, love, please, let’s just sit down and I can explain better.”

“I can’t.”

I spin and rip the door open, running across the street and back to Aspen’s. Luckily, they’re upstairs when I race inside. I throw the door closed and lock it behind me before sprinting up the stairs and back into my old room. I throw myself on the bed and that’s when I realize that tears are streaming down my face. I fall back on the bed and cry until Aspen knocks on the door and lets herself in.

“Addy? Are you ok?”

There’s another knock at my bedroom door and Roman pokes his head in.

“Lincoln is downstairs. He wants to talk to Adeline.”

“No.” I say.

Aspen looks at me before turning back to her husband.

“Not now. Tell him to go away.”

Roman nods to her, before giving me a worried look and closing the door.

“What happened?” She asks.
