The sound of the gunshot reverberated through the car, making my ears ring so that I didn’t hear the snap of bone.

The first thing I actually heard when the ringing started to fade was the uniform’s screams.

“Oh, shut the fuckup,” I snapped.

“You—fuck—you—my arm—”

I shoved him roughly out of the way with my door, hoping to hell that I’d managed to push the gun so that the bullet hadn’t hit Taavi. I could hear him whimpering, but I had to pay attention to the asshat who also carried a taser, since I didn’t want to not get shot only to get fucking tased.

Fortunately, he was human, and I’m not.

I had him out and on the ground, still wailing about his broken arm, with my knee in his back and his unbroken arm pinned before he could sort out how to get at his taser. I leaned down, putting my lips close to his ear.

“Give me one good fucking reason why I shouldn’t break your other arm and then haul your ass in for assaulting a senior officer,” I snarled.

“Fucking—pointy-eared—”

Behind me, Taavi barked once, and I felt a surge of relief. This asshole was fucking lucky, because if he’d hit Taavi, we both might have found out whether or not this elf really could snap a human’s neck with his bare hands.

Instead, I reached around and found the edge of the badge pinned to his uniform, yanking it off. I looked at it, then hissed as I ripped the duct tape off it with my teeth.

“Well, well,Officer Sanders.” He went still. “Precinct Four, are you? I do wonder what IAD will think of your escapade this evening.”

He groaned.

The sound of a siren echoed through the streets.

I really hoped it was because Raj had answered his phone.

My heartrate picked up again as I hoped to fuck that he’d called someone who wasn’t going to use this as an excuse to shoot me and apologize later for the dark and confusion.

The siren cut out as an engine stopped, and I held my breath.

“Hart?”

Thank fucking God.

“How nice of you to join us,” I replied, adrenaline and fear making me cocky as fuck.

Dan Maza walked into the circle of light under the streetlamp, and his expression was murderous. For a split second I thought he was pissed at me, but then he crouched down and threw a cuff on Sanders’s wrist, completely ignoring the fact that the arm was bent at an unnatural angle.

“Tell your little MFM friends you decided to fuck with the wrong elf from the wrong precinct,” he hissed, ignoring Sanders’s cry of pain.

“Come on now, I’m sure he was only acting under orders. We can’t hold him entirely accountable.” I wasn’t at all sure, but I really fucking wanted to know.

“Fuck—you,” was the only response I got.

“Save it, dickhead.” Dan dragged Sanders to his feet, then hauled him over to his own black and white, shoving him in the back.

Then Dan came back over to where I sat on the cobblestones, leaning against the open driver’s side of my car, one hand reaching up to pet Taavi where he sat in my seat, having crawled over to put a paw on the back of my head.

“You okay, Hart?”

“Fucking peachy,” I answered, pointedly ignoring how badly my hands were shaking.

“I’m going to call this asshole in,” Dan told me. “You sure you’re okay?”

I nodded. “Fine. There’s a new hole in my car somewhere, goddammit.”
