When I saw them standing next to each other, I kind of thought the pairing might work. He was calm, collected, and conniving; she was fiery, fierce, and focused. Together, they could be a real force to be reckoned with.

Or maybe, really damn good leaders.

Nev dipped his head toward Fovea, murmuring something to her.

Her eyes narrowed at North, but she murmured something back that seemed to relax Nev.

“Before I make the victor my mate,” Fovea said, raising her voice again. “Myself and the other female fae wish to offer the humans an agreement.”

Ervo’s arms tightened around me.

When I looked at North, her gaze was hard.

We all waited, silence flooding the forest.

Fovea went on, “I propose that we call off the coming fight. And that rather than declaring North my second-in-command, the female fae recognize her as the leader of the human harsh… who are the protectors of their own human life-bringers.”

Priel let out a heavy breath of relief.

Honestly, I think most of us did.

North made the fae wait a minute though, before she finally called out, “We accept your proposal and guarantee that you won’t be attacked, should you choose to move out of the Stronghold.”

Fovea dipped her head. “We will consider your offer.”

Then she released Nev’s hand and crossed the space between us, stopping in the middle of the empty patch of land.

North pried Priel’s arms off of her, striding over to meet the fae woman at the center of the field. When Fovea offered her a hand in a very-human gesture, North accepted it, and shook.

The whole crowd seemed to calm as the women returned to their own groups. And when Fovea shifted to her dragon form, huffing at Nev after he threw a leg over her back and climbed up onto her, cheers erupted from the female fae.

We all watched them take to the sky, and then in a random, insignificant fashion, the groups dissolved.

“I need to find Sunny,”I told Ervo.

“I know.”He stroked my hip before he released me.

“We dodged a bullet with that one,” North told us, as she, Priel, Lian, and January stepped over to us.

“I think January’s baby deserves the credit,” I admitted.

North snorted, and January grinned.

“I didn’t think Teris was going to fight,” I said, looking over at the man’s unconscious form.

“He’s going to have to do some serious groveling if he wants to be with Sunny,” North agreed.

January grimaced. “I don’t know if any amount of groveling can make up for this.”

There was a decent chance she was right.

“Is Dots going to be hurt too?” North asked me.

I shook my head. “I don’t think so. I’m going to go find them, though.”

“I’ll come too,” January agreed.

“Same,” North said.
