Apparently, my female hated surprises.

“You’ll see,”I reminded her again.

She groaned at me, but continued flying by my side, brushing the edge of her smooth, scaled wing up against my feathers time and again, as if reminding me that she was still there.

We flew deeper into the mountains, until we finally neared the place the pawe liked to graze.

“We shift on the edge of the valley,”I warned Mare quietly.“We must stay calm, and act as if we’re not predators.”

“Okay…”She was dying to know what we were doing, and I fought hard to hide my excitement at her upcoming reaction.

She was going to be thrilled enough that her eyes would gleam, the way they did when she was so happy she had to fight off tears. I didn’t understand why they watered as much as they did, but she’d helped me see that it wasn’t always a bad thing.

Now, I took joy in the moments when she was happy enough to cry.

“Follow me closely,”I added, putting out my flames and diving toward the valley’s edge.

Her shock vibrated through my mind when she saw what we were there for. She spiraled down to the ground, landing beside me perfectly, just like I’d taught her to the day before. This was only our third day of being mated, but so far, I was utterly obsessed.

Despite her perfect landing, she pressed herself against my chest, her palm covering her mouth as her eyes watered. She stared at the creatures on the grass in front of us for a few silent minutes.

I remained quiet for her sake, letting the wind tug at us while my female worked through what she was seeing.

“What do you call them?” she finally whispered.

“Pawe.” The word was pronounced paw-way, though it would sound different on her lips than mine.

“They’re horses,” she finally whispered. “Bigger, weirder horses. Just like fae are bigger, weirder people.”

A soft chuckle rumbled my chest, and she clutched me tighter, looking up at me with so much excitement that my lips curved upward.

“I love you, Viervo. You know that, right?”

“I do, but I’ll never protest hearing the words on your lips.” I brushed a kiss to her forehead, and she went on her tiptoes to press her mouth to mine quickly—once, and then again. “And you know I love you?”

“I know.” She pulled away, her eyes bright and watery and happy.

Pride coursed through my veins at how easily I had pleased her—at how quickly I had realized that she would love the creatures here.

“Can I get closer?”

“As long as you stay slightly behind me. They’re gentle creatures, unless you piss them off. I’ve seen two of them rip apart a dragon in his beast form who didn’t show them proper respect,” I explained.

Her gaze grew alarmed. “Maybe we shouldn’t.”

“They know me,” I assured her. “And soon, they’ll know you as well.”

She looked uncertain, but nodded

My fingers caught hers as I stepped just in front of her, and she stayed behind me as I slowly led her toward the creatures.

Greeting the pawes and letting them carry you through the mountains was the surest way to discover more of Vevol’s secrets. My brothers and I had done so a hundred times or more—and with every journey we discovered a new cave, hot spring, or otherwise-hidden location.

They treated us as well as we treated them.

I supposed they were like our females, in that way.

We approached the large male I always greeted. Though he had a name, as all living things in Vevol, I had no way of knowing it. And even if I did, he wouldn’t have given it to me.
