He was a wild creature, made for hidden coves and undiscovered paths; not an animal to be tamed.

My eyes met his, and I dipped my head toward him.

He dipped his back.

My gaze slowly moved over the other pawes, making sure none of them were close enough that me and Mariah might encroach on them.

When I was satisfied that my female was safe, I slowly stepped up to the male’s side and lightly stroked his thick, strong neck. He huffed at me, and I chuckled softly.

“This is my mate,” I said to the pawe. “My Mariah. She’d like to greet you, if you’re willing.”

The beast studied her for a moment before nodding his head at me.

Pride swelled in my chest.

I slowly led her around to the front of me, trusting the creature now that he had agreed.

She nodded once at him, like I had, and he tossed his head at her.

Telling her to get on his back.

“We would enjoy a journey,” I told him, lifting Mariah off the ground with one arm as I set my other hand on the beast’s back. In one smooth motion, I’d lifted us both up together. He was massive enough that our weight barely affected him, and the moment we were on securely, he took off.

Mare

Wind streakedthrough my hair as we bent over the creature’s back, and joy coursed through me as tears stung my eyes.

So many memories—I had so many memories about riding horses. The best ones from my time on Earth included the strong, powerful creatures.

I had loved them so much, and I had missed them even more.

And the man behind me had seen that, and brought me to meet them, because he realized what they meant to me.

I’d never been loved like that before, by anyone.

And it felt like a privilege to be loved that way. I didn’t know if I really deserved it, but damn, I was glad Ervo was mine.

Eventually, the pawe slowed. Ervo thanked it, and eased me off the creature’s back before he bowed his head toward it. We were in the middle of the mountains, and my eyes landed on a small, shaded lake.

The sun was shining over us as Ervo led me wordlessly to the shady lake. I think he knew I needed time with my thoughts.

He sat down with his back against a tree, and pulled me into his arms. I relaxed against him, letting my mind return to Earth. To my memories of Stacy and my horses. To the family I’d left behind, and the one I’d gained when I came to Vevol.

Everything had changed for me when I came here.

And all of it, for the better.

Especially in the last few months.

I hadn’t really gone through with my plan—hadn’t slowly convinced Ervo that we were equals.

But he knew.

And I did too.

“Are you okay?” he asked me, his voice a soft murmur.
