“I won’t crumble before your eyes, right?” She flashed him a smirky grin, hoping to lighten his mood and assuage his anxiety.

“All right, wiseass, but I can’t help it if I wanna worry about you a little longer.”

“I think it’s adorable that you’re concerned and very sexy that my roughed-up cage fighter has a softer side.”

“Well, then you’re gonna love this.” Samson dug into the pocket of his jeans, sat on the stool next to her then presented his closed fist. He slowly opened his fingers, and a small velvet box rested on his broad palm. “Go on, open it.”

Lisbeth hesitated for a moment before she snatched it from his hand and flipped open the lid. “Oh, my God, it’s beautiful.” Her breath caught. She didn’t bother to blink back the tears rolling down her cheeks as she slipped the ring on her finger.

“I’ll make whatever you want happen. Just say you . . . love me.”

Lisbeth gazed down at the diamond-encrusted eternity ring, impressed at Samson’s good taste, completely different from her first, over-the-top ring. This man truly knew her.

“I love you.”

He enveloped her in his muscular arms, and she savored the warmth of his body.

“I was gonna hold off till tonight and do the whole candlelight dinner thing, but I couldn’t wait. I guess you’ve figured out I got no self-control when it comes to you.”

“I think our downstairs neighbors figured that out, too, when they got in the elevator yesterday.”

They both laughed at the visual of the door opening to a middle-aged couple staring at Lisbeth with her legs wrapped around Samson’s waist, two seconds from elevator sex.

She leaned into him, kissed his lips softly, then gazed into his eyes. “I can’t wait to start our life together finally.”

“As an event planner, you’re gonna want to do the whole wedding thing, but I don’t wanna wait too long. I feel like we’ve waited long enough.”

“I did the whole planning thing once, and well”—Samson’s face clouded over, and she covered his hand with hers—“I have no desire to do it again. The only thing I want is for you and me to be together. Anyway, you’ve taught me to be more spontaneous the last few weeks, and I have to say I’m enjoying it. Much less stressful.”

“In that case”—a sneaky grin played on his lips—“let’s get married.”

Afew seconds later, his phone blew up with messages and her phone did the same. They both swiped at the messages, then stared at each other.

Samson grabbed the remote and flipped on a news channel as Lisbeth scanned the internet.

“Oh, my God, I don’t believe it.” Her news app flashed with a notification thatup-and-coming political figure, Alex Monroe, is being charged with the murder of an unnamed girl.

Samson raised the volume on the TV, and they both watched in awe.

In a special news bulletin, Alex Monroe, international financier and CEO of Nightlife Magic, has been charged with sex trafficking, soliciting prostitution from minors, running a vast network of underage girls, and importing illegal drugs. Most recently, Monroe was accused of the murder of an unnamed female in his private ten-thousand-dollar-a-night suite at the Beverly Wilshire. Evidence was reported that confirms his DNA along with that of the woman in question.

The screen behind the reporter flashed with Alex Monroe’s face, followed by pictures of a seemingly woman dead sprawled across a bed.

Anyone with information regarding this victim is asked to call 555-464-3742. The rest of the report included hotel workers claiming they saw Alex with this girl, then a segment with the governor of California claiming he had no idea “Alex Monroe was involved in such reprehensible behavior” and has rescinded his support.

In another story involving this family, Edward Monroe, the son of Alex Monroe, is being held for holding three innocent people at gunpoint in a Las Vegas warehouse ...

Samson muted the TV, both of them stunned.

“I don’t believe it.” Lisbeth rewound the report as Samson’s phone buzzed with a call.

“Seen the news today?” Frank’s voice filtered through the phone.

“Yeah.” Samson’s eyes were glued to the TV as he rewatched the report.
