Confronting that person hanging out with the rest of the crew members shouldn’t have been her first step, but her temper got in the way as she stalked toward Wheeler and scowled at his feigned innocence.

“Me?”

“You did it on purpose.”

“Why, newbie, I have no idea what you are talking about.”

He smirked, entirely too smug for her liking.

“You messed up the floors.”

“As I recall, you were tasked to clean it last night. It’s a shame you are too lazy to do your job properly.”

Nicola growled and took a step toward him, but a figure blocked her path. She looked up at Arty, a tall, gap-toothed pirate who gave her a warning glower.

“Watch it. You don’t get to blame your shortcomings on one of us.”

“I was blaminghimbecause he did it.” When the man didn’t budge, and her fangs were close to coming out, she gulped in frustration and backed off. “Never mind. That idiot isn’t worth it.”

She turned around and yelped when hands hauled her back.

“Arty, mate, there’s no need for violence—”

“Filthy pirate trash. You should have stayed with the likes of that Jasper scum, you piece of shit. I knew you were good for nothing.”

Nerves flitted through Wheeler’s cut-off sentence, but it was the hands disappearing that had her ducking to avoid the punch swinging her way. Her hand came up to push Arty away and ended up knocking him into a pile of boxes. Wheeler’s mouth dropped open, but he didn’t move as the other men stood up and surrounded her.

“Go ahead. Try me, fellas.”

A hand wrapped around her wrist, stronger than she anticipated, and avoiding her next swing. She bit back the surge of strength, still trying to maintain her disguise.

“Let me go, you—”

“Stop trying to kick me. You don’t want that ridiculous wig falling off.”

The voice in her ear was so soft no one else could have heard it. She stilled, then gasped when Isaiah hauled her over his shoulder with ease until her vision was turned upside down.

“Let me go,” she repeated, gripping the back of his shirt and ripping it.

“What did I say about getting in trouble?” he growled, then sighed. “Arty, stop following me.”

“But Captain, he started it—”

“No, he didn’t. Wheeler.” Even in her upside-down state, there was no missing the look of warning and the cold suddenly enveloping the atmosphere. “I do not condone harmful pranks and deliberately messing up my ship just to play with someone.”

Wheeler’s voice had turned small. “Yes, Captain. I’m sorry for the mess.”

The admission was enough to change the tide as Arty gaped at Wheeler in disbelief, then switched to shooting dirty looks.

“Clean it up,” Isaiah said easily. “Ah, Marko, there you are. I will let you deal with this while I deal with our new one’s temper here.”

“Ye, Captain.”

Maddox came into view but disappeared when they entered the cabin, where Isaiah dropped her abruptly.

“Take off your wig.”

She wrenched it off and glared at him. The man didn’t look at her, stalking his worktable.
