“I didn’t start it.”

“I know you didn’t. But you are in a pirate ship, and we tend to be sneaky. You come from an island of sneaks. You shouldn’t let it get under your skin.”

She knew that. She knew it so well that it irked her why she was losing her temper like this, and she attributed it to finding no answers until now.

“I’m not. I won’t. I—what are you doing?”

Isaiah stopped unbuttoning his shirt, brown eyes on her—energy snapping a beat before he resumed until he was shirtless. It stunned her how his scars were starker under the harsher lights of this room, drawing her gaze as she explored him thoroughly.

“You tore my shirt off during your little petulant moment. It’s a silk shirt, too, and very expensive.”

Her eyes snapped up, meeting his. Heat formed and had her lifting her chin.

“I will pay for it.”

“There is no need for that.”

She opened her mouth, ready to argue about it. But his next words knocked Nicola out of her orbit.

“There is no need to be shy, either. It’s not like you didn’t already get a glimpse last night while you were spying on me.”

Chapter 4

Her cheeks were flushed and her eyes were angry, flashing a brilliant green storm that captivated Isaiah more than anything else in the world. Irritated with his reaction, he continued moving, aware of the way she bottled up her emotions the closer he got. When he was right in front of her, he waited for her vampire instincts to snap.

Instead, she gazed at him with the haughtiness of someone who had probably got called the superior being all her life. Up close, her beauty was even more apparent, and his fingers itched at the urge to wipe the smudge off her smooth cheek. He fisted his hand, trying to separate that beauty from the kind of creature she was: wily, manipulative, and dangerous to the core.

“What were you looking for?”

Wariness flew over her features, and he could tell the moment she considered lying. Then she confounded him with her answer.

“Evidence.”

“Evidence of?”

“Evidence of what we are looking for. Maddox said it’s not in your ship, but I had to recheck.”

By looking in on me bathing?was at the tip of his tongue, meant as a jest. But he knew she probably checked all other parts of his ship, too, and his teasing faded as his guard went up.

“What is this evidence that you are looking for?”

“It’s none of your business.”

“And are we cleared of these secret charges?”

“Maybe.”

Her body had relaxed slightly, indicating the real answer. She refused to give it away, though, so he changed tactics.

“All right, then. Let’s get to the other matter. Why do you have such an attitude? Maddox doesn’t.”

As expected, that turned her rigid all over again. This time, her answer was loud and clear.

“I don’t trust you.”

“Oh, yeah? Which part?”

“All of you. Your charming words. Your nice gestures. Your generous gifts. You are a pirate.”
