He slipped into his cabin without any more interruption, then felt a spark of fear when he couldn’t find her. Suspicion rose and he checked her old cabin instead.

“Jeez, darling, you scared me for a second.”

The blanket couldn’t quite hide her intense shivering. His heart clenched at her lost look, so he climbed on the bed and pulled her to his lap. Nicola curled into him.

“Ruby did something to this room,” she finally replied.

“She probably practiced magic here. It’s warm.”

“Maddox. He will look for me.”

“He’s better off not connected to us tonight.”

She quieted down again after that, content to snuggle to his body heat. He held her tighter, perhaps needing the comfort, too.

“I’m sorry,” she blurted out. “I knew I couldn’t take it.”

Perhaps it was the cold waters, but it took a while for her words to make sense to him.

“You saw it.”

“Creature. Animal-like. I don’t know what kind. Two of them.” A pause. “It looked similar to the creature that tried to attack our king.”

Well, holy shit.

“Darling, are you related to the king?”

“The previous one, yes. I just work for the new one now.”

He didnotsee that coming. Isaiah peered at her face.

“Hendricks.”

“Yes.”

“I had trouble with you guys once.”

“I…yeah.”

“I like your brother.”

She tensed at that. “Which one?”

“The one who is still alive. Is he still alive?”

Now she relaxed. “Yes. He's living his best life with his wife.”

He tried to imagine the cold-looking, ruthless man who had interrogated him once falling in love and letting loose. Then his thoughts shifted, settling into the current territory.

“That creature…it had to be Ven’s assassin.”

“Yes.”

“Was it meant to kill you or me?”

“Probably you.”

Isaiah sighed. “I guess my attempt at friendship didn’t work, then.”
