“Why would you even want to be friends with a man like that?”

She moved slightly, unaware of the turmoil running inside him. Few knew. Most were innocent of the burden he possessed and the nightmares the turmoil brought at the lowest, most vulnerable points of his life. Maybe he could blame the cold waters, too, for speaking now.

“He killed my parents when I was ten.”

He felt her pulse trip, mostly because he was rubbing her wrist with his thumb. She sat up.

“What?”

“I don’t have the full details, but I am pretty sure he was responsible for burning Moon’s home, too. Moon doesn’t remember much. But we found him close to a shifter island that was already…gone. There was evidence that Venhad been there.”

“Oh. Moon. The moon.”

“Hmm.”

“Is he…?”

“Most likely. But he hasn’t turned yet. He hasn’t felt anything yet.”

“And your crew?”

“Marko knows. The rest don’t.”

He got lost in memories, his mother’s smile the most prominent. Her scream. He clenched his fist, then let go when Nicola took his hand.

“My father was a former pirate turned trader,” he said. “He changed his lifestyle after meeting my mom, who was a merchant’s daughter from Centro.”

“What were their names?”

“Ivan Charles and Desiree Roe. They opened up a store in Centro. They did trade with your houses before…before.”

“Isaiah…”

“My father was one of the few people interested in the ghost ship. Have you heard of it?”

When she shook her head, he gave her a rundown.

“Did he kill them for it?”

“Maybe. I think so.”

“Isaiah, I’m sorry.”

“You shouldn’t be. You didn’t kill them.”

She tilted her head, noting his casual tone.

“This isn’t friendship,” she surmised. “You want revenge.”

“You have always been pretty clever, darling.”

“Isaiah—”

“He’s mine, Nic.”

He tried to ease the vehemence in his tone, but there was no helping it. Yet what astonished was Nicola putting her foot down, too.

“No.”
