“Oh, shit.”

“I killed one. We need to leave before they realize that.”

“Right.”

Pain materialized on her shoulder when Ruby tugged her to leave. Nicola glanced at the darkening spot, frowned, and blew off the remnants of ice fragments that embedded into her skin.

Behind them, the first shout began.

Chapter 12

“What do you mean she left? Did she say where she was going?”

“She didn’t say where she was going, Captain. But she did ask where ye were.”

Isaiah didn’t like Marko’s answer at all, but Wheeler inserted himself into the conversation before Isaiah could respond.

“Is this about the woman, Captain? Did she ditch you or something? Should we go kidnap her?”

“You’re an idiot,” Arty said, sauntering toward them.

“Yer an idiot,” Marko agreed, then scowled at the two of them. “Go back to work.”

“There’s nothing to do.” Wheeler shrugged.

“I know where she’s going, but I can’t tell you.”

The voice had all heads swiveling to gawk at Maddox, who lurked in a corner as usual. Then the questions started.

“When did you get here?”

“How the hell did you bypass our traps?”

“Where have you been?”

“Why not?” Isaiah boomed louder than the rest, demanding the half-vampire’s attention. Dark eyes met his.

“She made me promise not to tell anyone.”

“And I made promises and broke them if it meant keeping the people I care about—”

Isaiah stopped in his tracks, realizing his heart was pounding so hard, and his body was riddled with tremors. To top it off, Moon and the others had gathered around them in curiosity and concern, with Marko at the very back being unusually quiet. Nicola was headed toward danger…but he couldn’t leave his crew hanging, not anymore. Not after last night.

“We will help her find you, Captain,” Wheeler volunteered eagerly. “She must be a nice chick if you are this worried.”

“Smart choice, Wheeler,” Arty said.

“Shut up, Arty.”

Chuck raised a hand. “Permission to join. She can’t be wandering around with the pirate lord in the Sky.”

“I’m joining, too,” Moon declared.

“Me, too!”

“She is Nic. She is a woman and a vampire named Nicola who stowed away in our ship because of a deal I arranged with her for her safe passage. In exchange, she helped the crew with ship tasks and helped us deal with Cross’s continuous harassment by saving Ruby.” His statement was met with stunned silence, and the stupefied faces had him pushing on. “She was also the barmaid pretending to get chummy with Ven and me. Ven tried to kill us—me—last night, and she saved my life. She has her reasons for coming to the Sky, but I can assure you her loyalties do not lie with him.”

Maddox didn’t budge, even when multiple eyes landed on him and concluded his part in this.
