“I know you despise vampires, but I can’t let anything happen to her,” Isaiah continued, this time looking at Wheeler and Arty. “I owe her that.”

Silence.

“She was…a vampire?” Wheeler finally asked, face paling.

“She was good at hiding it,” Arty observed, expression unreadable as he glanced at Maddox. “So were you.”

“Yes, well, my half-human side made it easier to hide my nature.” Maddox still didn’t budge as they openly assessed him.

“So, all this time, I was insulting and picking a fight with her….” Wheeler trailed off.

“She could have killed ye, but she didn’t,” Marko grumbled. “I was waiting for her to snap yer silly neck off this whole time.”

Wheeler gasped. “You knew?”

“Only because I was a better observer than ye.”

“I knew,” Moon announced, which switched all the focus to him as he shrugged. “She hated sunlight.”

“I knew.” This time, it was Alvin. “I saw her feeding Maddox blood when he was injured.”

That shook the others, but they recovered instantly and faced Isaiah again. Wheeler stepped up.

“I will still help you find her. It’s not every day a vampire sticks up for us, and I’m no coward.”

After some hesitation, Arty stepped up, too. “Me, too.”

“Ven killed my parents.”

The two pirates blinked while the rest gawked. Isaiah lifted his chin, prepared for accusations and questions, but there were none.

“That changes things,” Wheeler said after a while.

“Wheeler,” Marko growled. “I swear if ye say….”

“That we will find Nicola and get rid of this pirate lord once and for all?” Wheeler shot back. “I’m in.”

“Not yet,” Maddox chimed in, braced for a protest. “We suspect he was behind the assassination attempt on our new king. Nicola and I need to make sure.”

Wheeler scoffed. “Same goal, different pace. I bet we can do all of that faster if we joined forces or something.”

Now it was Isaiah’s turn to gawk as the rest murmured their agreement and refused to change their minds from there on. He opened his mouth to argue over their safety and how they shouldn’t be involved in this. He even had promises in store to make them back off and ensure he would be the only one with a target on his back. Then he looked at Marko again, who still didn’t say a word but whose expression told him what the man thought.

Have faith in them.

Isaiah nodded slowly.

Then he gestured at them to gather slowly and cleared his throat.

“Fellas, it seems we have one goal. Now, let’s talk specifics and a solid plan that won’t get any of us in trouble.”

It seemed simple to sneak into Ven’s ship and look for Nicola and Ruby there, but the warning buzzed in his head enough that he abandoned it completely for a more complicated plan. Within an hour, he was strolling the Sky as if he had no care in the world, persona in full gear and assured that no one would mess with him. Naturally, it didn’t take long for figures to shadow him, putting the first step into motion.

“Henrietta, my dear, it’s so good to see you again. I suppose there’s no room in your busy day to reminisce about the old times?”

Henrietta, an older woman with a bust that tried to spill over her blouse and a beauty mark that emphasized her wide lips, smirked at him and playfully bumped his hip.

“There is, but I don’t think you have room for me in your new trader life. I have a free room, though, as promised. How long do you need it for?”
