“Moon.”

Reluctantly—and defiantly—Moon turned to him.

“I can be here.”

“Who said you couldn’t?”

Isaiah patted the boy’s shoulder and ignored the perplexed look as he leaned against the stacked boxes and surveyed the activity. Arty came over after a while to help, then trudged off when Chuck called for assistance.

“Why aren’t you mad?” Moon blurted out after a while.

It was just the two of them now, and Isaiah had been waiting for this. Patience did pay off sometimes.

“About?”

“About that incident.”

“Specify that incident.”

“Me turning,” Moon insisted. “Me botching up the plan.”

“Did we free the creatures?”

“What—”

“Did we?”

Moon peered at him in confusion, then nodded. “Yes.”

“Did we get the enemy to surrender?”

“Yes.”

“Did we all come out of it alive?”

Moon finally realized where the series of questions were leading and gulped. “Yes.”

“Then I say it was a successful plan.”

“Nic got poisoned. She almost died.”

His heart jumped, the fear still lurking in his memory when he carried her out of that steam room. That it took Ruby an eternity to find her pulse had only added to that excruciating feeling.

“She would have been poisoned either way. Ven was always going to be the last enemy standing. In the end, we defeated him. You finally transforming into your true form doesn’t change that.”

“I could kill anyone.”

“Did you kill them? When you were transforming?”

“I…no.”

Isaiah patted him again. “Then you won’t. You will do better. You will control yourself and hone your instincts. You care about us enough to do that.”

Moon glanced at his hand, then scrutinized him. “You knew what I was.”

“Most of us suspected. We didn’t tell you because we didn’t want to pressure you. It doesn’t change how we think of you. We accept you, Moon, just like you accept us and our vampire comrades.”

“Oh.”
