She and Alexis had come by the house to hang out, a plan that got spun into us going out for dinner. I thought I’d done a fine job of getting myself together, but Morgan clearly disagreed. In her words, she was trying tomake sure I didn't look like a victim.

Which would undoubtedly turn heads.

Which I definitely didn’t need.

“I know you're not trying to be funny,” she responded, propping a hand on her hip. “Cause I’m dead serious. You can let that husband of yours know thatthisis unacceptable. We thought we were putting you in good hands. Matter of fact, where is his ass?I’lltell him.”

“It's not his fault,” I countered, and this time it was Alexis who stepped forward, eyebrow raised.

“Oh we're defending him now?” she said. “You must really be in love.”

My eyes went wide.

As hell.

“Um…I'mthe one with the head injury here,” I said. “I should be saying the crazy shit, not you.” I took a quick glance at myself in the mirror, adjusting my collar a bit to make sure that any signs of my lingering bruise were covered.

“It’s not that crazy. He’s yourhusband.”

“I've literally known this man for like four months. Has it evenbeenfour months? More like three,” I reminded them both.

“Bitch it’s definitely been at least four months, can you not?” Morgan laughed.

“Cany’allnot, is the better question.”

“Ooooh, she sensitive about it,” Morgan quipped, and I pushed out a sigh.

“Not sensitive I just don't think it's accurate to say I’min lovewith that man.”

“That man,” Alexis grumbled. “You mean your husband.”

“Or even realistic,” I continued as if I hadn’t heard her. “Like… are we forgetting that I had to drag a bitch across my dining room table behind this man, not even two weeks ago?”

“Oh Idoremember.” Alexis laughed. “And to be honest, that’s making it even harder for you to beat thein loveallegations, babe. I mean… unless you’re trying to convince me that you drag bitches about men you don't even want? ’Cause that's definitely not the NalaIknow.”

Morgan scoffed. “The dragging part? ’Cause finding out she did that was literally what made the most sense about this whole situation since it started.” She giggled and Alexis joined her.

“Yes we know our good sis is with the shits, butI'mtalking about this fictional narrative that she’d do said dragging over a man she doesn't care about.”

“It was about thedisrespect,” I huffed. “Was I supposed to just let that ride? Honestly I should’ve gone upsidehishead too.”

“Don't front Nala,” Morgan said. “We all know you're unfazed until you're not. And then you're very fucking fazed. You cannot convince me that you did that shit and don't care about this man. ’Cause if you didn’t care, you would’ve just laughed in that lady’s face for trying to play in yours.”

“Mmmmhmm,” Alexis agreed. “And I keep coming back to,whydo you think there's something wrong with you caring about this man?”

“Because with everything that's gone on, I should still be thinking about what I can slip into this nigga's pie so I can widow myself,” I answered with a shrug.

“Oh please,” Morgan huffed. “Just face it, sis, you've accepted the reality of your situation, and we've had this conversation before,” she reminded me. “There is nothing wrong with making the best of it. Including…falling in love with his ass a little bit.”

Alexis raised her hand, doing a pinching motion with her fingers, and I shook my head.

“Stop,”I insisted.

I didn't even like thesoundof that shit.

I was tolerating him fine, now that we’d gotten past the whole birth control thing, butin love?
