“Ouch!” I shrieked, more out of surprise than actual pain.

That time, he’d struck me right in the ass.

“You motherfucker,” I muttered, leaning to grab two gloved handfuls of snow. I was well beyond the years of snowball fights with my friends growing up, or out in the yard with Soren, but not far enough that I didn’t remember the techniques that used to send him crying inside to Mama.

Orion’s next snowball hit me square in the back of the head and I made a big show of how bad that one hurt.

“Dumbass!” I yelled when he fell for it, trudging in my direction to check on me. His eyes went wide when I straightened up, launching my oversized snowball directly at his face.

I’d waited till he was too close to duck it.

“You know your ass is mine now, right?” he asked, before he was even done clearing his face.

“Gotta catch me first!”

I took off towards the house, thinking I had some advantage. A belief he quickly put to rest by almost immediately catching up.

I shrieked, loud, my voice echoing off the surroundings as he grabbed me at the waist, easily pulling me down. He flipped me over on the snow, planting a hand on either side of my head.

“Caught you,” he jeered, and I threw a handful of snow at him, my only possible recourse.

All that did was make him laugh before he grabbed me at both wrists, pinning me into the snow.

“Now what?” I asked, still trying to catch my breath.

He shrugged. “You tell me.”

“You’re the one who started this.”

“Just trying to have a little fun.”

Fun.

Is that what this was?

The moments before this, from first getting hit with the snowball to him catching and pinning me down… when I played it in my head, once again, I was fighting a smile.

So maybe it was.

“It’s okay for us to have a good time together… you know that, right?” he asked, with his face much closer to mine than it had been a moment ago.

As well I could, I shrugged. “You’re more convinced of that than I am.”

“That we’ve been having a good time, or that it’s okay?”

“Either. Both.”

He chuckled, his lips barely an inch from mine. “You can pretend about a lot of things, Nala. But don’t you dare look me in the face and fictionalize the chemistry. It’s there. You can’t deny it.”

“I can try.”

As soon as he smirked, I knew what was coming.

And of course he was right. I couldn’t refute the chemistry, and I hated it so bad. My brain outright refused the signal to turn my head away. I welcomed the warmth of his lips on mine, the rasp of his tongue when he slipped past them, the lingering sweetness of fruit juice as he kissed me like we were…

Fuck.

Even though it was bitterly cold, and my leggings were weather-inappropriate as hell, I was perfectly content to stay half buried in snow, warmed by the weight of Orion’s body as he kissed me like we were exactly what we were.
