We all chuckled. We had no doubt she would.

“In the meantime we need to figure out our next move. I know many of you have other cases you are working on. Those are still your first priority for the time being. But as things develop and more clues come to light, most if not all of our efforts could be transferred to the Beast Boys. You four are still on the case full time,” Susie said, looking at our team, “And Charity and her team are here as first line of backup if need be.”

My peripheral vision showed Charity nodding.

“That’s it for today. Be kind, work hard, and if you need to, kick butt.” Susie closed her meeting the way she always did.

I loved that woman.

But I couldn’t deny that I felt a little let down. I hadn’t expected the meeting to end without receiving a new clue. I’d really hoped we’d have something to work with by now. I knew it was presumptuous on my part, but I’d assumed that Susie and the team back here would have come up with something for us to go on by the time we got back into the office. Unfortunately it looked like that wasn’t the case.

I bit my lip.

So what now?

Our coworkers filed out, Aria among them. I was guessing she wasn’t ready for one-on-one time with her aunt yet.

I stood after most of the room had emptied and headed toward our workstation. I could hear the other girls following me.

If we didn’t have another clue yet, at least I could make a dent in the mountains of paperwork I really needed to tackle. There was the incident at the club, the bar, and the convenience store.

I stopped walking.

The convenience store. How had I forgotten?

Chills ran up and down my spine.

“Mr. Detraux,” I said, whirling to face Ella and Shai.

“Who?” Ella asked at the same time Shai smacked her forehead.

“How did I forget?” Shai asked herself.

“We were a little busy,” I reminded her. After the convenience store, we’d gone to the club where Shai had beat up an entire gang of men and then the bar where Aria had been taken and then . . . well, it had been a long night.

Ella was looking back and forth between Shai and me. “Someone fill me in here.”

“Let’s find Aria first,” I said as we walked to our desks. I immediately posted the paper Susie had given to us up on the half wall beside me. I didn’t want to get busted for not listening.

“Do you know who Mr. Detraux is?” Ella asked Aria as the rest of us also fastened up the handouts. Susie had us trained well.

“Who?” Aria asked as she finished pinning.

“My question exactly,” Ella said as she sank into her chair.

“Remember that guy Nadia hit on that had a girlfriend?” Shai began, her voice full of mirth.

“Shut up,” I replied, taking over the story. “The crazy couple from the convenience store.”

Ella and Aria looked confused. We really hadn’t shared anything about that afternoon with them. Probably because it had seemed so minor compared to the rest of the day.

“One of the businesses on our list was a convenience store. I tried to get to know the guy at the register.”

“She flirted with him,” Shai interjected unhelpfully.

I glared at her. She laughed unrepentantly.

“Anyway,” I said, drawing out the word. “His girlfriend showed up and they got into a huge argument.”
