“Because Nadia was flirting with Jasper,” Shai said with a pump of her brows.

This time I threw one of the candies from the bowl on my desk at her head. She easily caught it and popped the chocolate into her mouth. “Thank you,” she smirked. I shook my head in annoyance and continued.

“While they were screaming, they kept going on and on about a Mr. Detraux. He seemed like the guy in charge.”

“I thought that whole afternoon had been a miss for you guys,” Ella replied.

I couldn’t believe we hadn’t said anything about Mr. Detraux sooner. It had felt like a huge clue at the time, until more exciting events had distracted us.

“We’d forgotten,” Shai said with a frown, annoyance at herself written all over her face.

“I guess that night did get kind of busy,” Ella said, offering Shai a very valid excuse.

But I understood Shai’s annoyance. I felt it as well.

“Every place we went to that afternoon had a manager but that was it. No one higher up. It was as if the bosses had all disappeared,” Shai explained.

“But this place had a guy in charge,” I continued.

“Someone the sleazy guy trying to get Nadia’s number seemed to be scared of. Likereallyscared of. He was more fearful of Mr. Detraux than his screaming girlfriend,” Shai said, tilting her head to emphasize her point.

I could feel our collective anticipation mounting. We could feel this was something. Even Aria looked hopeful.

“So how do we find this guy?” Ella asked.

“He comes in on Wednesdays,” I replied and then groaned.

“That’s good news, isn’t it? Tomorrow is Wednesday.” Ella’s eyebrows pinched in confusion.

“Yes. Except that means I have a whole day with nothing to do but this paperwork,” I moaned, waving toward the piles of papers on my desk.

My team laughed, our morale rising once again. Today we would do paperwork, but tomorrow we were going to find this Mr. Detraux and make him tell us all he knew about the Beast Boys.

Spoiler alert. There was nothing wrong with Damon. Not a single thing. A whole dinner with my family and he’d seemed to only ever say the perfect thing. And the way he looked at me when something was funny, like he wanted to share a laugh with only me? Heart officially melted.

Well, I guessed there was one thing that could be considered an issue. He sometimes snorted when he laughed. But, idiot that I was, I found it adorable. And in even more of an idiotic move, I’d traded numbers with himandtold him I’d go out with him.

The nearly flawless guy who was way prettier than I was.

I was so screwed.

Especially because we’d hung out Sunday night. And when I’d come home from work at a normal hour today, I’d called him and told him I was free tonight. Tuesday. Two nights after Sunday.

Did that make me seem desperate?

Absolutely.

And yet Damon had seemed thrilled.

Did I mention he thought it was rad that I was an Aurora’s Girl?

I was so sunk and I hadn’t even entered the water.

Keeping the news from my teammates had been near torture. But I knew if I said a single word Nadia would stalk him on social media and Shai would check his criminal record and credit report. And although I truly hoped the criminal record didn’t exist, if it did, I wanted to hear about it from Damon. Not from my friends, even though I loved them.
