A crash met our ears as Shai kicked open a door.

“Nothing,” she said flatly as she swept the room quickly and moved on.

Nadia passed by the open door and then it was my turn. I glanced into the room, my eyes widening as I took in a mattress in the far corner and empty shackles on the ground.

This was a dungeon. The medieval term was all too appropriate for how these men must treat their victims.

My stomach turned at the thought. Not only did they have Aria, but they surely had countless others as well.

My hands began to shake with desperation, an overwhelming need to find hernow.

“We’ll get Aria and these monsters keeping her,” Charity promised, eyeing my hands with concern.

I needed to pull myself together. Freaking out was helping no one.

I hurried down the hall as Shai kicked in her fourth door.

“No,” Charity breathed as sirens filled the air.

The cops were here.

“You two go back the way we came. Keep the cops off our tail as long as you can,” Shai ordered Nadia and me as she flicked her flashlight in our direction.

We nodded our silent agreement.

“Charity, you keep checking these doors. I’m going to make a run for the end of the tunnel. If it’s like the other one, there’s a back way out. I have to get there and see what I can find,” Shai said, breaking into a run. The rest of us watched her for a moment, hoping against hope, but we all knew she wouldn’t find much. Everything in this place felt long vacant.

Then we all fell into our tasks, Nadia and I booking it back the way we came as Charity continued to the next door.

We ran up the stairs, nearly slamming into police officers who were coming in the way we had. We’d debated closing the door behind us, but without knowing if we could reopen it from the inside, we couldn’t risk getting stuck in the tunnels. So we’d had to leave it open for the cops or anyone else to find.

“Hands in the air,” the officers commanded as several guns were pointed in our direction.

I didn’t blame them. We shouldn’t be here.

“My name is Nadia Rivera,” Nadia explained quickly as she raised her hands. “This is my colleague, Ella King. We work for Aurora’s Girls.”

A collective groan ran through the group with guns trained on us. Aurora had quite the reputation. These guys had probably hoped they could just arrest us, the intruders, and get us out of the way. But now they were stuck with us. We had a reputation of helping cops with their jobs and I was sure none of them wanted to ruin that relationship.

“We each have a gun holstered to our right hips,” Nadia continued in an even voice.

Letting the lawyer do her thing was a good idea. It would have been much worse if the cops had found our guns without warning. We weren’t doing anything wrong, considering we all had concealed carry permits, but if they found the guns on us it would be an unwelcome surprise for them.

“Simmons.” One of the cops motioned for another officer to move forward.

Simmons gingerly approached us and lifted the hems of our shirts carefully, exposing nothing but our guns. I liked these cops already.

Simmons took each of our guns and returned to formation.

“I’m Officer Martinez. Where’s your ID?” the first cop asked Nadia. He appeared to be the spokesperson for the group of six officers.

Most of the force knew that Aurora employees all carried Aurora identification cards.

“In my back pocket,” Nadia answered.

Martinez nodded. “Turn around and then carefully take your ID out of your pocket.”

Nadia did as directed and Simmons moved forward to take her ID.
