“Let’s just say this—Eddie, my boss, has bigger things on his mind right now than some woman who heard something she shouldn’t have.”

I was filled with questions. What had happened to Eddie? It was clear by Connor’s tone that there was far more to his statement than what was on the surface. But I didn’t want to wade into information that I had no business worrying about. After all, that had been Kat’s mistake.

“So, she doesn’t have to hide?”

He nodded without hesitating for a second. “Yeah.”

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

And that was it. As short as he was being, I felt better right away, like I could trust his words. I was eager to tell Kat about the conversation and let her know that the worst might’ve very well been over.

His single word was enough to allow me to set my worries aside. However, there was still something else to be discussed.

He turned to me, the signature smirk still on his face.

“Something tells me that’s not all you’ve got on your mind.”

“Yeah. You’re right. But I don’t know where to even begin.”

“Just go with your gut.”

“You make it sound so easy.”

“That’s because it is so easy. The true difficult course of action is to overthink and drive yourself crazy in the process.”

I loved these little reminders that Connor wasn’t just an impossibly handsome face.

“OK, what’s this thing between us?”

He said nothing at first, raising an eyebrow.

“Between us?”

“Yeah. This thing of ours.”

He chuckled. “What do you want it to be?”

“I don’t know what I want, exactly. But I can say for sure that I don’t want to be someone’s fling or side piece or whatever. And I’m not saying that you have to be my boyfriend if this is going to go on any further.”

Connor nodded thoughtfully, looking forward and processing my words.

“How about this,” he said. “I’m into you. It’s surprising, since I normally do not feel this way.”

“Same here,” I quickly replied. “This whole thing is new to me. I don’t have experience with matters like this.”

He smiled. “Then we’re in this together, whatever it is.”

Together. I liked that.

“Whatever it is, we don’t need to label it,” he went on. “We both know that we like to be around one another, and as far as I’m concerned, that’s all weneedto know. So, let’s just go with it, see where it takes us.”

I pursed my lips for a moment. “Dinner.”

“Dinner?”

“Yeah. I need to get some things done tonight, but how about tomorrow night? I’ll come over here and cook.”
