“Not going to deny that. Now, take care of your business and bring that sexy ass back around here as quickly as you can.”

There was something about his tone that turned me on, his commanding cadence, the way he spoke as if he knew he was going to get what he wanted. I hated it and loved it all the same.

“See you in a few,” I said, grabbing my purse and stepping into the elevator.

He gave me a casual flick of his hand, my last sight of him before the doors shut that of Connor on the couch, his coffee in his grasp, a sly grin on his face.

My mind raced as the doors shut, the elevator returning me to the ground floor. I was still under his spell for damn sure but being alone gave me the touch of mental clarity I needed to really focus on what was going on.

Kat. I needed to talk to Connor and find out what I could about her situation.

There was something else that occurred to me as I took the elevator down, the doors opening into the spectacular lobby… what the hell was going on between Connor and me? I wasn’t sure what I wanted from him, but I knew that I had no interest in being the Mob boss’ little sex toy until he got bored and tossed me aside for another model.

Would Connor do something like that? Was he the type of man to use women for his own amusement? Did his job allow for normal relationships? I wasn’t sure. He lived the sort of lifestyle that didn’t exactly lend itself to a normal girlfriend-boyfriend sort of arrangement.

Part of me thought that I was crazy for even thinking about such a thing with a man like him. But there I was, strolling into the office trying to sort out the logistics of dating a criminal kingpin.

I stepped into my office and checked in with Ana. She wanted to know all the details of my meeting with Jose, but I told her those would have to wait for another time. A quick check of my itinerary for the week showed that I didn’t have any work to worry about for the rest of the day. Research on the Burciaga case would need to be tackled soon but for the time being, I was open.

After firing off an email to Melissa letting her know I’d be out of the office for the remainder of the day, I left as quickly as I could, my heart practically beating out of my chest as I called an Uber to take me back to Connor’s place. I couldn’t believe how I was feeling—like I was a teenager getting ready to go on my very first date.

What was Connor bringing out of me?

I checked in at the front desk when I returned to Connor’s apartment building, the attendant buzzing him and confirming that I was allowed at his place. I took the elevator back up and by the time the doors opened I was practically ready to strip off my clothes and pounce on the man.

Keep it cool, lady. You’ve got important things to discuss first.

I didn’t spot Connor anywhere when I first entered the penthouse. After a little searching, however, I saw him on the balcony, his feet propped up and a drink close at hand. The smell of coffee was in the air, so I helped myself to a cup before joining him.

It was lovely out there, the space covered from the rain, a small heater keeping the area nice and toasty. Connor flicked his eyes over to me, the corner of his mouth curling.

“Sit,” he said, gesturing to the chair next to his. “You look like you’ve got something on your mind.”

God, he was good.

“Not sure how comfortable I am with a man who can read me so easily.”

“Not that you’re easy to read,” he said. “Just that I’m very good at it.”

I chuckled, his confidence bordering on cockiness always playfully amusing to me.

“What’s going on?”

I took a sip of my coffee, preparing to ask what I had on my mind.

“It’s Kat. Kiki. Whatever you want to call her.”

“The girl who got away,” he said. “What about her?”

“I want to know if she’s safe.”

“Sounds like you’d know about that better than I would.”

We were both playing a game, keeping our relationship to the woman in question fuzzy.

“I want to know if she has to worry about the pricks who hurt her trying anything else.”

Another sip, followed by him drumming his fingers on the table as he tried to figure out how to respond.
