“Best plan to get him out unharmed is to lure one or both of those guards first, then take him.”

“We don’t care if he’s harmed.”

The man in that elevator had not acted like someone missing his wife or daughter. He could suffer. We needed him alive. You could be maimed yet still alive.

It took an hour before Kellan was ready to make a move. In that time, the third guard returned with room service, then they rolled it inside. The third guard remained but the other two left.

Pity.

One guard would be easy to subdue.

“Transport is here,” Alphabet said. “They’re ready to do a pickup when we are.”

I nodded.

Leaving the room, I crossed the hall and knocked on the door.

“Wrong room,” the guard in the room said.

I knocked again and waited. A blank expression and no comments went a long way sometimes.

“Wrong. Room.” The guard was closer to the door.

And annoyed.

I didn’t smile, but I did knock again.

“Look, you stupi—” The guy swore as he started to open the door. I didn’t wait for him to finish, just pushed in and cracked him in the face with the door. He staggered back but then lunged right for me, except I was already inside and I had a gun up and pressed to his forehead.

Across the room, Sharpe stood near the windows overlooking the city, cell phone in hand. He hadn’t turned around yet, although there was no doubt I had his attention. Satisfied, I pistol-whipped the guard, using the butt of the gun to knock him out.

Crossing to where Sharpe stood, I nodded to his phone.

“Brad,” he said slowly. “I need to put you on hold.”

Sweat beaded Sharpe’s forehead. I didn’t care if he was uncomfortable. I waved him over to the bed and caught him in the back of the head with one solid blow. He crumpled face-first into the bed. Too soft a landing, but I dragged him over to ensure he was still breathing.

“Reginald,” the voice on the phone said, “I am not done with you.”

His name was on the screen. Good. We had the phone number. Impatience creasing every single word, he called to his brother again. I lifted the phone to my ear as I walked over to unlock the adjoining door.

“Your brother can’t come to the phone, Mr. Sharpe,” I said.

“Who the fuck is this?”

“You’ll see.” I could leave it there or add, “Maybe.” With that, I ended the call and then powered the phone off. Kellan stared at me and then at Sharpe.

“This wasn’t the plan.”

“He’ll live.” I hadn’t broken his nose.

Not yet, anyway.

Exasperation touched his expression, but Vaughn grinned. He reached down and hauled up the guard into the other room.

Kellan walked over to Sharpe. He checked his pulse, then emptied his pockets. He tossed the wallet and keys to me, along with another phone. I also made sure it was shut off, then stuck it in my pockets with the other.

A knock at the door. “Housekeeping,” Freddie called. “Sorry to disturb you, Mr. Sharpe. We’ve come to take care of the mess.”
