“Do I like it? No. But the simple fact is, she’s a Sharpe. She’s their only heir. Unless he’s changed things recently—she is the key. So…lock it down, or you may end up being stuck watching everyone else have what you want because they are where you want to be.”

Shaking my head, I raked the hair back from my forehead. “You want out—get out. We’ll make it happen.”

“No,” Adam said, his expression unchanged. “I’m where I can do the most good right now. The minute this Julius King finds out that not only am I not dead, but I’m in bed with someone who wants to destroy him? It won’t go well for any of us, and we need to be ready for that battle.”

He didn’t have to necessarily point out that we weren’t ready right now, because we absolutely weren’t.

Fuck.

“And if it costs you…?”

The only answer he gave was a shrug. “It has already cost me. At this point…”

Been there.

“I do have a question for you,” Adam said.

“Ask. No promises that I’ll answer.”

He didn’t say anything at first, pausing only to glance back at the car where Ezra sat in the driver’s seat, notlooking at us.

“When we approached you at school…”

“I’d been waiting for it,” I said, and he turned his gaze back to me. “Yes, I had an idea of who you were and that you were involved.”

“Because of Hardigan.” It wasn’t a question, and the dead neutral tone gave nothing away.

“Yes.”

He exhaled a long breath. “So, your loyalty has always been to the Vandals.”

“You earned my loyalty, too—both of you did. Even when Ezra is being a shithead.”

A faint smirk touched his lips. “I got that when you didn’t kill me.”

“You’re welcome.”

He snorted, then faced me. “Hardigan.”

Guarding my expression, I waited. “What about him?”

“Do you trust him?” Not the question I expected.

“With my life.” Nevertheless, because he may not understand just that, I added, “With Rome’s life.

That earned a frown and a glint of surprise. But he said nothing before glancing back at the water.

“Why?” I would have thought it was apparent that Milo, like the other Vandals, was my family and I trusted them with everything.

“I don’t know Hardigan, and he’s—” He glanced at the car, then shook his head. “You know what, never mind. Is he still working on that job for your friend Traschel?”

“Fuck, probably. I don’t know. We’ve been a little busy.”

He handed me a card. “Give him this if he is. I’ll answer the call.”

I studied the card then him. “Is it a trap?”

Adam smirked. “Not at the moment. No promises in the future, though.”
