Both looked at me in surprise.

Sam shook his head. "Babe, I've got this. I'm calling security to escort her out."

“You fucking bitch,” I exclaimed. “You think you can just throw yourself at my man?”

“Oh please. If he knows what's good for him, he'll drop your sorry ass anyway. You're a killjoy. And you need to get your shit together. My investors dropped me.”

"Means they know what's good for them." I was so angry, I could barely breathe. I balled my hands into fists.

She scoffed. “It's not my fault you blindly trusted my lawyer.”

“I thought you were my friend, not some two-bit scammer.”

“Sophia, I told you, we have a very good lawyer in the family," Sam said in a calm voice.

“I see. You're going to let him fight your battles, huh?" Sophia said, crossing her arms over her chest.

"No, I will publicly declare everything. I will lay it out for any of your investors to read.”

“You bitch."

I smiled sardonically. I really didn’t know I had this in me.

“You don't get to call me names or make my life any harder than you already have.” I felt some of my anger seep out as well as the resentment I'd been holding on to ever since the business collapsed. “Do you have any idea how hard it was for me to start over from scratch, to keep my mother from worrying?” It was my deepest fear that if Mom worried too much about me, she might get sick again. I read online that when you’re stressed out, the body produces cortisol, which blocks the immune system.

“I don't give a crap.” Her snotty reply infuriated me.

I was shaking. She'd thrown herself at Sam. This had to be rock bottom, even for her.

I walked to the door and opened it. “Leave, Sophia, or I swear to God, I’ll lose my shit, and you won’t even have a dress to walk out in.”

She huffed, taking her coat from the bed. She'd put it on ourbed! I had to dig my nails into my palms to keep from slapping her. I held my breath when she walked past me; I’d had enough of her sickly sweet perfume back at the store.

Once she left, I turned to Sam.

“You were magnificent,” he said.

“Why was her zipper undone?”

He put his hand on his hips, his feet wide apart. "She threw herself at me. Obviously failed."

"Did she kiss you... or did anything else happen?"

My heart was in my throat, and I could barely breathe.

In an instant, Sam was next to me. "No, babe. Why would you even think that?"

"I don't know. I came in, she was half naked, and you were red in the face." My voice shook.

"Because I was pissed off, and I told her to fucking get dressed. I'd never touch another woman. You're everything I want, okay? I'm hereforyou andwithyou, and that’s never going to change."

He put a hand at the back of my neck, resting his thumb at the base of my hairline. Tilting his head forward, he touched his forehead to mine. "Don't doubt me, Avery."

"I don't," I whispered. "I just... I don't know. She's hurt me so much, and then seeing her here with her boob hanging out. It messed with my brain."

"You mean the world to me, Avery. Let me show that to you." He brought his other hand just under my shirt, skimming his thumb on the waistline of my pants.

"You can't do that," I whispered, taking a step back.
