“As a man. He shoulda been the first to tell me ‘bout all this.”

“But I’m telling you. You’re my father.”

“How long?”

“Excuse me?”

“How long y’all had this shit going on?”

That was hard to answer. “Officially? For the past year and a half, maybe.”

“And he ain’t…” He turned away, fist going to his mouth. Then my father rolled his neck toward me. “I just saw the nigga last month, visiting mommy.”

“Who visited Grandmother? You or Tobias?”

“We both did! I thought it was weird but let it slide. He a good kid. I just thought he was being a little bit of a weirdo for still hanging on to old shit.”

Whoa!

Tobias went to visit my grandmother. I dropped my face in my hand. “That’s the problem. None of this is old. It’s still an issue for us.”

“What is?”

“When Kelvin mentioned wanting to marry me back in the day, even you weren’t with it.”

“You damn right, I wasn’t.”

“Why?”

“Because the nigga was a square. A fuckin’ goof troop. He couldn’t take care of no good girl like you. We eat them pretty-boy, arrogant, weak-ass niggas up in the penitentiary. Real eyes realize. I spotted that pussy-ass in him coming from a mile away.”

“Grandmother hadn’t.”

“Psssst!” he spit into the air, brushing me off with a hand-wave. “Say, now, my mother’s a old, respectable, church lady. You damn right she gon’ think marriage is the way.”

My forehead wrinkled. “Why? Had she ever married?” Then I thought about it. “My last name is Curry. Yours is, too.”

“Yeah!” he returned defensively.

I stood. “Grandmother’s last name is Williams.”

“And?”

“Who is your father? Did she marry and divorce him?”

“Nah. Mommy ain’t never been married.”

“Then whose last name do you have?”

“My pops! What you mean?”

“Who was your father, Dad?”

He pivoted again, turning away from me. “Ah, man. That’s that lady’s business. I ain’t never get into it. I saw him a couple of times as a pup. Ain’t no biggie.”

“That’s my point. Grandmother pushed me to make a weighty decision. When she found out Tobias liked me, she flipped on him. She told me he wasn’t allowed at her house anymore. Then, when Kelvin came sniffing around, she practically pushed me down the aisle to the altar.”

He sucked his teeth. “Man, that old shit, baby girl.”
