He needed to be rotated out of here. He was too comfortable. I doubt that it would keep him from sniffing around here. That wasn’t the point. With comfort came risk. I needed somebody who could chase down the fucker who thought he could even look in Martina’s direction. Ralph knew what was coming.

“Whatever you need from me.” He nodded more to himself than to me.

“Good.” I entered the kitchen to find a buffet littering the island.

“Uncle Ami!” Amina ran up behind me and her arms circled my thighs.

“Is that my princess?” I turned, picked her up, and kissed all over her face.

“Too much! Too much!” She giggled in my arms as if I’d tickled her. She curled into me accepting every kiss with laughter tacked on the end.

“Amina, can’t your uncle visit in peace? He came to see me.” Martina put her hand on her waist as she popped a cherry tomato into her mouth. “I want my time with him alone.” She chewed while looking at her daughter.

“No! Uncle Ami comes to see me. You’re just here to supervise.” She giggled as I kissed her more.

I paused at her sassy yet playful tone.

“No, you’re here stealing my time.” Martina threw a tomato at Amina and she caught it then popped it into her mouth before smiling as she happily chewed. Then she put her arms around my neck and held on to me tightly sending a loud message to her mother.

All of us laughed hard at her but she didn’t let go.

“Sheesh. You’d think he was your brother.” Martina wagged her finger at Amina.

“And you’d think he was your uncle, sheesh, Mommy.” She even tossed in the headshake.

Simone giggled along with Martina.

“Ladies, ladies…” I hugged Amina tight. “No fighting over me.”

“We’re not fighting, Uncle Ami. We’re having a big girl conversation, right Mommy?”

Martina giggled and nodded. “We are. You think this is your time.”

“And you think this is yours. Mommy, you should share.” Amina wagged her finger.

Simone almost spit out the juice that Martina had poured for her.

“You both should share.” I kissed her cheek hard and fast. “Right?”

“Yes, Uncle Ami.” Amina smiled big and I set her down on the floor. “Man you’re getting big, six year old.”

“I’ll be seven next month.” She sway proudly.

“You will be.” I picked up a plate and debated what I wanted.

I loaded cheesy eggs, steak, spicy potatoes, blueberry waffles, and bacon onto my plate. Martina reached into the cupboard and handed me a tall shaker.

“Grazie.” I tilted my head in gratitude and sat my plate at the head of the table. She came over shortly after with coffee, cream, and sugar.

Simone watched me from the counter.

“We came to eat, yeah?” I waited for her to move, but she didn’t.

“You told me that it was a restaurant.”

“No. I said I knew the best breakfast spot.Thisis definitely what I meant.”

“Simone, help yourself.” Martina giggled before she took Amina by her hand and exited the kitchen.
