The glass allowed me to see who was there at the same time that they could see me. Denny. I sighed and opened the door.

“Hi,” I said.

“No rush, I wanted to make sure that you were okay. Bossman said you were probably sleeping in, but I knew if anything happened to you on my watch, it wouldn’t matter that he’d kill me.” He chuckled. “I have a feeling you’d haunt me, too.”

I smiled softly. “I’m sorry. Have you been waiting outside all this time?”

“I got here around five and checked to make sure everything was good outside after what happened this morning. When it appeared solid, I sat in the car. Since it’s after eight, I figured it was time to come find out if you were safe on the inside.”

I sighed feeling guilty. “No, Denny. I appreciate that. I’m safe. Apparently, tired as hell, but safe. I’ll get ready to go. I can call a car to come to get me. You don’t have to wait any longer.”

“Why call a car when I’m already here? Get dressed, take your time, and I’ll see you in a bit.” His tall frame was also hefty.

Around three hundred plus pounds, he was also taller than 6’6”. He’d have to duck to come inside. He watched the street as he walked, a steady gate that showed me that he was ready for anything. Pale, his hair so black it appeared black. Clean face, and a naturally serious face, he fit the role of driver. No hat though. I got the “don’t fuck with me” vibe from him, but I knew that had everything to do with what he did. His smile sweetened him up nicely.

When he got into the car, I closed the door and got to work on getting ready. I showered, washed my hair, and left my hair wavy. Owning my curls, I moisturized them and let them hang. I dressed in all black… the dress was cute but… My eyes returned back to the closet where a white dress taunted me.

“I should have never spoken to Asia.” I muttered to myself.

She’d encouraged me to let Beni heal the wounds of Marcus. A rebound. I’d already done that. Something I didn’t want to take seriously. A distraction. With Beni, I didn’t think walking away would be so easily done. He was too intense. It was like playing with fire. She encouraged that too. My eyes landed on the dress again.

“Fuck it.” I took off what I was wearing and slipped on the white dress instead.

Wedge heels, french tip toes, white dress that swooped low in the front to my stomach, tan clutch to match the soles of my shoes, and long gold dangly earrings hung from my ears. I swooped my hair up into a messy mohawk and kept my makeup natural. I tapped my nails on my clutch. They were natural, but the shine from the clear polish helped to make them fit in with the gold thin rings on my fingers.

Hoping that I wasn’t being presumptuous, I left my house and went to the car. Denny nodded, almost as if giving me his approval.

“You look lovely, Ms. Simone.”

“Thank you, Denny.” I got into the car and swore that I’d held my breath the entire drive.

Pulling up to the club, I notice added security right away. I’d never seen these guys before. I also noticed more cameras were in the parking lot. They came from every angle and as I entered the club, they were there, too. Small and discrete, I noticed them because things felt out of place. As if somebody had touched something and tried to put it back but failed to get it in the exact position that it was before. There was also a place for valet parking with a guy manning the station.

More changes without my permission. Why had I even thought that this was going to work. For a minute, back a few hours, I wondered how far things could go between Beni and me. Now, I knew that it was a child’s fantasy that would never be fulfilled. I wasn’t gullible like a lovestruck fool. I knew when someone was running game in me. No amount of kissing was going to make me overlook that he didn’t respect me.

Walking through the club, I searched for him. He was nowhere to be found. I bumped into Cara and she smiled big.

“I’m so glad you’re here. Don’t you look fuckable.” She giggled.

I shook my head unable to ignore the compliment. I knew I was blushing, but there was nothing to be done about that now.

“Things were crazy for a little bit. Now that the new cameras are up and working, everything is good. I like the valet addition. Do you think that it’ll draw bigger names our way?

“I don’t know. I didn’t authorize any of this.” I shook my head killing off any idea that she had about me being on board with this.

“Oh.” She looked around speechless. “I thought…”

“I know. It’s okay. Next time double check with me. Have you seen Beni?”

“Yeah, he’s in his office. He took the one beside yours.”

“The one that I insisted that you take?” I asked.

“Yes. I like being down here. It keeps near where I should be.” Though she wasn’t the general manager around here, I was gearing her to be.

I wanted someone that I’d groomed into the part, not someone who would come in here with their own ideas and mold it into their dream place. We worked together to build on making the best decisions for the club and I knew she’d continue that when the time was right.

“I’ll go make my rounds and see what else is happening. Then I’ll go check on numbers before the party starts.”
