“Really? We’re growing on you?”

Mali waves her off. “Fuck no. You’re repulsive. But fucking with him is my favorite hobby.” She stands up and grabs the two small baggies. “Okay, we should get going with this.”

Laiken nods and turns to me once more. “I’ll let you know when we get there, and I’ll call you when we leave.”

“You better.”

She arches up on her tiptoes and kisses me quickly, but before she can walk away, I stop her. Taking my time, I press one kiss to her eye, followed by another one over her heart, and lastly, one more to her lips. It may be cheesy, but the way she giggles makes it worth it.

“I love you, too,” she says.

I don’t think I’ll ever tire of hearing that come from her lips, especially when I had to go so long without it. The only time I got to listen to it was when I watched our wedding video. And if I have her vows completely memorized, no one needs to know that but me.

Laiken heads down the stairs first, and Mali turns to smirk at me. “You know, you’re going to need to say the words at some point.”

I chuckle as I roll my eyes, flipping her off playfully.

But she’s right. I will need to say the words, and I’m getting there. Laiken has been so patient with me, but I want nothing more than to break down the last little bit of that wall and tell her what she to wants to hear.

Soon.I’m almost there.

THERE’S NOTHING MORE FRIGHTENINGthan knowing that Mali and Laiken are at some place, doing DNA testing to figure out if the person who has been making our lives a living hell has been right under our noses the whole time. When all of this started, Riley wasn’t even a blip on the radar of potential suspects.

To be honest, I’m still not sure she is.

I can admit there are things that seem suspicious, but it’s also possible that she really is just a girl with a crush who turns green with envy when she sees Laiken and I together. But if that’s true, that would mean I let Laiken attack one of my employees on a hunch. A wrong one at that. So, it’s a bit of a conundrum.

As my phone starts to ring, I can’t answer it fast enough when I see Laiken’s name appear on the screen.

“Hey,” I say, finally able to breathe.

Her voice sounds like honey as it comes through. “Hey, babe.”

“How’d it go?”

“Good,” she replies. “The results should be back in a couple of hours. Some kind of new rapid DNA test they have. Mali will get an email with them when they’re ready.”

Wow. “That’s crazy they can do it so fast.”

“That’s what she said.”

A bark of laughter emits from my mouth. “You better not be referring to yourself. You know damn well I can last—“

“You’re on speakerphone!” Laiken yells.

“Oh, yes. Because Mali is such a saint.”

Mali yells in the background. “You’re the worst.”

“I know,” I singsong. “And yet you stick around.”

She snorts. “I’m stuck with you. I don’t have a say in the matter.”

“She really doesn’t,” Laiken agrees. “We’re on our way back, so we should be there in like twenty minutes.”

“Sounds good, babe. I need you with me, right where you belong.”

I can practically see the smile on her face as she sighs into the phone and Mali pretends to gag in the background.
