Pushing myself up, I can feel my whole body shaking as I go to walk toward Cam’s Jeep. “I’m going to fucking kill her.”

Cam jumps into action, stepping in front of me and putting both his hands on my chest, and yet the adrenaline coursing through me still manages to move him.

“Hayes, you can’t,” he tells me.

“The fuck I can’t.”

I’ve never wanted to hurt someone more than right now.

This bitch has the audacity to be around me every day. To work in my bar and act like my friend, and then goes and takes my fucking wife? There is nothing worse than a scum like her, and I’m going to make sure she never sees the light of day again.

“H,” Cam pleads. “Listen to me. The only reason we have an advantage right now is because she doesn’t know we’re onto her. This whole time, she’s been the one with the upper hand, but now it’s us. And if you kill her now, we might never know where Laiken is.”

Fuck.

It fucking hurts.

At least when I’m angry, it masks the pain that threatens to rip me apart. But when I think about the fact that I don’t know where she is, that I can’t hold her and tell her she’s going to be okay, I feel like I’m dying the most painful death. Being skinned alive would be more humane than this.

This pain is unforgiving.

It’s ruthless and has no mercy as it takes me down.

“I can’t lose her again,” I say with a sob. “I can’t.”

Cam and I don’t normally hug, but neither of us give a shit about that as he comes closer and wraps his arms around me. I know he’s scared too, and so is Mali, but they both know that I’m never going to make it through this if we don’t find her.

They’re scared for Laiken, but they’re also scared for me.

My phone dings twice in my pocket, and I rush to open it, hoping it’s something about Laiken. But what I see isn’t at all comforting.

Instead, it confirms my worst fears.

It’s a picture of Laiken, taken from above her. She’s unconscious and in what looks like a wooden box.

They’re fucking burying her alive.

The message after is just as sinister.

She’s alive, but she won’t be for long. You can find her hidden away in sacred secret places. Just hope you’re not too late. ;) xx

Oh my God.

I shove the phone into Cam’s hands just in time for me to turn around and vomit everything in my stomach onto the ground. The pain is excruciating. To know that she’s going to die if we don’t find her, and not only that, but it’s going to be so damn terrifying for her.

I can’t handle it.

“What the fuck is that supposed to mean?” Cam shouts.

Mali takes the phone and presses her fist to her mouth as she whimpers at the sight of her best friend. “No. They can’t do this. They can’t take her from us.”

I force myself upright and walk over to Mali, taking my phone from her and texting them back.

Please don’t do this.

I’ll do anything. You can have whatever you want.

My bar. My house. My truck. ME.
