“So, I take it he’s not mad at you anymore?” I ask.

Her expression turns skeptical as she hums. “No, he is. I just have a way of getting what I want.”

Of course, she does. “In that case, got any ideas on how I can get Hayes to stop shutting me out?”

“You mean sex in the storage room wasn’t the answer?”

“Har har,” I mock as I flip her off. “No, asshole. It wasn’t. And neither was the sex in the bar before that, or earlier, when we fucked in the living room.”

Her eyes widen playfully. “Jesus Christ. I don’t know if you know this, but it’s actuallynotyour job to repopulate the earth.”

I choose to ignore her previous statement. “It’s the only way he lets me feel close to him. But it’s almost always immediately followed with him icing me out. Like today, we got into an argument where he straight up said he doesn’t know if he wants me to stay.”

“Like in his house?”

“Like in town, or around at all.”

She starts to giggle, and it quickly spirals out of control until she’s a hysterical ball of laugher. “I’m sorry. It’s just…you really believe that?”

I shrug. “He’s given me no reason not to.”

“Yes, because the fact that any time you’ve been alone, he can’t keep his hands off you isn’t an indication at all.”

“Are you always such a sarcastic bitch? Am I just now seeing this?”

“Yes,” she answers smugly. “It’s my favorite personality trait.”

I chuckle, only for it to be followed by a sigh. “I don’t know, Mal. What if he decides he can’t ever trust me again? What if we really are over?”

She gives me a sympathetic smile as she plays with my hair. “If you two are over, I’ll be entirely convinced that love isn’t real.”

“It is though,” I tell her. “I feel it every time I look at him. Or think about him. Or talk about him. OR think about something that has todowith him.”

“I get it,” she cuts me off. “You eat, sleep, and breathe Hayes. Tell me something I don’t know.”

Okay.“We broke the mantel above the fireplace today.”

A loud bark of laughter shoots out of her mouth. “Seriously? How in the fuck?”

I giggle at her reaction. “He sat me on it and ate me out. Turns out those things aren’t so sturdy.”

“Damn,” she murmurs. “You are one lucky bitch.”

“I know.” I turn to look up at the ceiling. “Now if only I could get him to love me again.”

Her phone dings and she starts to get up from her bed. “He still does. He’s just being an idiot. But at least he’s an idiot who can get rid of a body without getting caught. They’re on their way back, so let’s go.”

Oh, thank fuck.

WHEN WE GET BACKto the house, neither Mali nor I ask any questions. Not where they put it. Not how it went. And definitely not if they almost got caught. I think I can speak for all of us when I say that we want to put the events of today completely behind us.

Except for the mind-blowing sex. That can stay.

The four of us all head inside and the minute Hayes turns on the light, Cam’s eyes widen. “Shit! I think someone was in here!”

He immediately starts looking around like a rookie FBI agent while Mali tries not to laugh. “Easy, Magnum P.I. No one was here.”

“Dude, did you not see the fucking mantel?” he presses. “It’s ripped halfway out of the goddamn wall.”
