Dave shrugs. “Honestly, I deserved it. I guess I was being a bit obnoxious.”

“Oh… that’s relieving to hear. Next time you see Landon, bribe him with a book, and I bet he’d give you at least a sentence for your piece,” I say.

“I’ll try that.”

“Doesn’t even have to be a good book. It just has to be in pristine condition with no folds, tears, or breaks in the spine.”

“All right,” Dave says.

“And don’t open it more than thirty degrees.”

“Okay…”

See? I’m learning.

Since it seems like Valerie has everything under control here by having nothing under control and screaming threats at security, I head off on my merry way to find Landon.

In hopes of figuring out where he is, I give Wyatt a call who informs me that Landon leapt out of the vehicle, skirted across a highway and ran off.

Because of course he did.

I rush off, not wanting to be away from him in case whoever did that to Landon strikes again. Knowing that he’s likely off with Nolan, I drive that way and park out front before walking inside where I’m immediately greeted by multiple people thrilled to have me here. After I tell them I’m in a hurry, I’m escorted back to Nolan’s room, which I have been to quite often with Landon by my side.

At first, I was a bit uneasy about the idea, but Nolan never tried anything any of the times we visited him. Now I’m just far too fixated on “Is he reading my mind?”

The security man opens the door, and I step inside where I find Nemesis smacking Zacia who seems to love it. Nolan is on his bed staring up at the ceiling, and what I assume is a Landon-shaped lump is beside him under the covers.

“Do you remember that one time we made that little old lady think we were her grandkids when we were supposed to con her, but we just loved her so much that we moved in with her to get away from our parents?” Landon asks.

“Was I supposed to forget that?” Nolan asks as he looks over at me.

“I wonder how she’s doing,” Landon muses.

“I still visit her.”

“She’s not mad even though she knows we lied?”

“She cusses me out every time I see her but still gives me cookies.”

“What the hell? I want cuss cookies,” Landon says as he slowly pulls the blanket down and stares at me. “Oh. It’s you.”

I walk over to the bed. “What’s that mean?”

He grunts and sinks back under.

I don’t like it when Landon is upset with me… he should never be upset with me. It makes me feel uneasy, but I have to remind myself that he’s just upset with the whole situation. “Are you mad at me?”

“Kind of.”

“Why?” I ask while wondering why he’s so damn cute.

Nolan catches my eyes. “Hey, Landon, all he’s thinking about is how cute you are and it’s just sad.”

“Wha? No. God, you’re so cute too, August,” Landon says, reemerging.

Dammit. Nolan’s reading my mind. I’m going to think about something weird and he’s going to know. Don’t think about anything weird. Don’t do it…fuuuuck.

“Now he’s thinking about the time you made him tie a string of lights around his dick… wait, what?” Nolan asks.
