Page 27 of A Hero in Hiding

“I… can’t… run…” I gasp out.

“We can’t yet see a clear path,” August says. “They could be waiting behind—”

I lift my hand, tearing a dead tree right out of the ground before seeing someone dart out from behind it and throwing the tree at them. Luckily for them, they barely manage to avoid it crushing them. “I… will… deforest… this area… if I can stop… running,” I pant out.

August picks me up and I feel absolutely special as he runs with me in his arms. Zacia is wondering what the fuck she got into and why she didn’t hide this morning when I called her name.

As we get near the car, August dumps me into NoTouchO’s arms while he digs around for his keys. I’m immediately dropped onto the ground, but at least we’re close enough to the car that it doesn’t matter. I clamber into the passenger seat with Untouchable in the back as August slams his finger against the button and starts the car. He begins driving, pressing down hard on the gas as something dawns on me.

“W-Wouldn’t they realize we’d go back to the car?” I ask while wondering what this awful feeling in my chest is. Why do people actuallychooseto go running? How is any part of this enjoyable? “Why was no one waiting at the car?”

“They would and if it was me hunting you guys, I would put a bomb on the car so that once I was sure both of you were in it, I would blow it up and… there’s a bomb on the car!” Untouchable says as I hear a noise.

August grabs my wrist in one hand and Untouchable’s in the other as time slams to a standstill. We probably have less than a minute with how much August has been using his time-stopping ability. Would all three of us even be able to get out and far enough from the explosion? We have thirty seconds at the most. Maybe twenty?

Fuck.

Gripping tightly onto August, I swing both hands hard and obliterate the car around me, forcing it to tear itself apart. I can feel it struggling to stay intact, I can feel all the parts working against me as I rip it and push all of it away from us. Every single piece that could be caught up in the explosion, I throw out with my mind until it’s just the three of us and Zacia practically floating in air above the road. We drop down, smacking onto the dirt road as time starts again.

My head screams.

Ripping a car apart without murdering any of us isn’t exactly my strong suit, and it took far too much concentration when I had so little time to work with.

“Oh hell,” I whimper as I grab my head and roll onto my side.

August picks me and Zacia up and starts running. “Are you okay?”

“My head went with the car,” I whine. “My head exploded.”

“Holy shit, that was impressive,” our guest who is keeping right up with us says.

“Am I still only worth a hundred dollars, NoTouchy?” I ask.

“At least a hundred and one!” he says.

“I hate you,” I grumble as I clamp my eyes closed for a moment to push back the pain so I can focus.

“My car’s right down this lane. We can take it!”

“And drive us off to your torture chamber where you’ll likely tie us up and make us tell you weird things,” I say.

“I do love weird facts! Did you know that dolphins sleep with one eye open! I wish I could do that. Instead, I just sleep naked because my balls like to feel free,” NoTouchy says.

“You are so fucking weird,” I realize. “I meant that you’d make us say things like ‘Ooh yes, those booty shorts do make your ass look big,’ you know?”

“And I’m the weird one! Ha ha!” Then he stops suddenly, turns around and shoots someone that I don’t even see before going, “Ha ha! You’re definitely worth a hundred and TWO dollars!”

I glance up at August and wonder why we’re the only normal people left on this earth. “August… I have realized that you and I… we’re all that’s left. We were dropped upon this fucked-up planet with these strange aliens with their strange thoughts and ideas who judge us… like we’re the strange ones.”

“Is your head alright?” August asks.

“No… it’s Swiss cheese at the moment, but your face is beautiful.”

“Thank you,” he says as we reach NoTouchO’s car, and after he makes sure that there’s no bomb on this one, we get in.

He drives off and I leave August to verify that we’re not heading to his basement to be thoroughly tortured.

“What’s your name?” August asks.
