I just stand there as I watch security race after him. At least not too many see since most had fled the scene long ago. Even after he’s dragged off, I’m still standing there questioning all of my life choices.

“Mom… please tell me I’m adopted?” I ask.

“Landon… your brother’s a fucking idiot,” she says. “But he’s our idiot.”

“Does he have to be?”

She seems to think about it for a really long time before giving me a nod. “Sadly.”

CHAPTEREIGHT

LANDON

While I’m absolutelythrilledmy brother’s underwear incident didn’t make national news, I fear it would have been better than the article circulating right now about Valerie’s attack on Wyatt.

There are plenty of people defending Superheroes United, but the most vocal of the bunch seem to think this is the start to our end. It’s created an intense focus on the rules and regulations pertaining to supers in the city. And it’s drawing out the people who think that supers should be controlled and monitored to a greater extreme than they currently are.

“We’re just going to do a little press conference and clear everything up,” Valerie says as she ushers us out to the waiting car. Since Wyatt is driving, Valerie gets into the passenger seat, and I open the back door. Seeing a load of junk on the seat by the far window, I wave my hand with the plan of dumping it all onto Valerie’s lap but it refuses to move. How… strange.

I get into the back seat and sit down in the middle as August gets in beside me and Zacia sniffs the spot next to me.

“So, Landon, when we get there,Landon, we’re going to be on our best behavior,Landon,” Valerie declares.

“I weirdly feel like you’re bullying me, Valerie.”

“I’m not bullying you. I’m explaining things loud and clear in the hopes that you find it in yourself to at least pretend to listen.”

“I’m not the one who shattered Wyatt’s guts,” I remind her.

She scowls at me, physically turning around in her seat to do so just in case I didn’t get the full effect. Once she turns back around, I try to remember how tall Asmodeus the Untouchable is before smacking him right in his invisible face. The slap makes a magical noise that causes everyone to turn and look at me.

“Who did you just hit?” Valerie asks as Asmodeus, still invisible, wraps his hands around my throat.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I say as I’m given a good shake.

“Your head will be worth a dollar sixty-nine if you’re not careful,” Asmodeus whispers in my ear.

“I just wanted to remind you that you are, in fact, touchable,” I tell him.

“Oh, I didn’t realize you were in here,” August says as he looks past me. “How are you today?”

“Quite good!” Asmodeus says.

“Who the fuck is in here?” Valerie asks. “Pull over! Pull over!”

Wyatt’s confused but probably fears another sucker punch to the gut and quickly pulls over right in the middle of a bridge.

“Have you ever wanted to meet a demon in the flesh?” I ask the invisible man.

“I have!” Asmodeus says, sounding delighted a moment before the door is torn open and Valerie starts smacking around trying to find him. Asmodeus has scrambled up onto my lap but even being invisible can’t save him from her wrath as she finally finds him and latches on before dragging him out into the street.

“Valerie, really, he’s fine,” August says as he hops out. I realize that being in the car might result in me missing something fun and hurry out as well, leaving Zacia inside.

Asmodeus has dropped his invisibility and is now wallowing around on the street as Valerie beats him with her shoe. Iswearshe just got done talking to mequite loudlyabout properly behaving in public, yet have I ever thwacked a man with a shoe in the middle of the road?

“I thought I was being kind by hand delivering the invoice!” he says, passing it to me.

Now August is worth sixteen thousand and I’ve dropped down to $101.69.
