“Don’t worry about it,” he says.

“Well now I’m worried about it. Did you knock some little granny out of it?” I ask. “That’s too far, even for me.”

“Just don’t worry,” Wyatt says as August wheels me off while Valerie barks that my family has to go through extensive checks to be let in. They are not pleased but I leave them to it, feeling like it’s good for them to get tortured every now and then after all the pain they put me through. I even debate texting Valerie ideas on better torture methods. She could waterboard them and they’d be dumb enough to think it was a routine occurrence for being admitted into the building.

Instead, I’m taken to the bedroom August uses when here. I’m picked up and placed in the bed by August who immediately starts tucking me in.

“I will guard your body,” Deus declares. “Oh great Beelzebub, I sure didn’t have to work this hard when trying to kill you two.”

“Are you sure?” I ask.

“Positive!”

“So do you know who hired you?”

“The man you’re looking for is not the one who hired me. The man who hired me does this shit for a living. Someone else hires him, he puts a price on your head and sends the info out to those who have worked for him, and whoever brings the head back wins the money. But I will try to see if I can figure out who hired him. It won’t be easy.”

“That would be great—”

“Landon!” Lex yells as he runs in through the doorway a moment before Deus grabs him by the head and just flips his entire body over his arm and right to the ground. Lex hits hard then skids a few inches before coming to a stop in front of the fish tank.

Deus freezes for a second before rushing over to Lex. “Are you okay? Did someone just try killing you?”

Lex looks up at him in horror. “YEAH! YOU DID!”

“No, no! Someone just tried killing you! I fear the room is unsafe! Someone! Someone!”

Lex is in pure shock at this display. “Youliterally just chucked me across the room. Whoareyou? Are you the bad guy? August! Landon! The bad guy is in the room!”

“I came to your rescue is all I did,” Deus says. Now that he recognizes that it was merely Lex who’d startled him, he’s too embarrassed to admit that he chucked his ass across the room. Lex is refusing to drop it, especially with the way the carpet skidding across his cheek left his eyeliner smeared.

“Landon!” Lex says.

“I… think I saw Deus throw you, butI also think that maybe he was saving you,” I say. “August? Your verdict?”

August just sticks another pin in his voodoo doll while watching the scene unfold.

Deus takes the moment of silence to cut back in. “I am… just so happy to have saved your life. I know that we do not know each other very well, but we are both of use to August and Landon and will sacrifice our lives to protect them.”

“Um… no, I like my life, okay?” Lex says before looking at me. “No offense.”

“None taken.”

“And who are you?” Lex asks Deus. “Besides the man who justthrew me onto the floor.”

“I would never. There’s clearly something foul afoot.” He pulls up his gun and proceeds to look through the scope like he’s looking for whatever threw Lex. He’d have to glance into a mirror to find what he’s looking for.

“This is Deus. He’s our…” I glance at August, not exactly positive what he is.

“Entertainment,” August decides on.

“Yes, entertainment.”

There’s a ruckus out in the hallway, signifying my family’s return. “Deus, my family is coming, don’t murder them.”

“I would never!” he says as I see his finger switch the safety back on.

My parents and Brandon come into the room unharmed beyond my mother muttering about Valerie. Brandon, seeing me in bed, kicks off his shoes and climbs in next to me. “Oh wow, this is so comfortable. It’s almost better than that cat bed you gave me!”
