“Let me see,” Mom says as she climbs in next to him and Dad right after her.
“Now I’m curious,” Deus says as he climbs in next to my dad. I look over at August and Lex, the only normal two in the room.
“I do feel like I could take a nap,” Lex says as he looks for a spot. He shimmies in next to me so now August is the only one standing.
“August, my love, join us,” I insist.
“Is… there room?” he asks, rightfully uncertain.
“You can lieon topof me,” Brandon says as he holds his arms out.
August watches him warily before climbing onto the smallest sliver left. He grabs the remote and turns a movie on and for some weird as hell reason, I find it absolutely delightful. Like… I’m being wrapped up in something warm and comforting as they surround me.
And that disgusts me.
CHAPTERELEVEN
LANDON
I’ve been given a week where I’ve been allowed to do absolutely nothing but be pampered by people and read. Using medicine that a super heightens the effects of with their power, I already feel back to normal. In that time, they’ve decided that Lex will be working with us when he can—I’m not quite sure if he agreed with this or it was chosen for him—but I’m glad to have him on board. Joy and Amelia were also reached out to, but they’re off dealing with some shit that sounds just as dreadful.
As we walk into the meeting room, I realize that Valerie isn’t alone. Standing beside her is the most assholish-looking man I’ve ever seen. There’s a way to tell that someone’s going to be a dick just by looking at them, and this man has it written across his forehead.
I mean… he might be extremely handsome with his slicked-back dark hair and black glasses that accentuate his green eyes. But there is absolutely no man who dresses that proper—who isn’t going to a wedding—who isn’t a dick.
“Please tell me he’s a stripper,” Deus says.
If the man appeared unpleasant before, he looks nearly enraged now. It’s not a blatant tell but a simple hardening of his jawline that tells me he’s close to erupting. I’m nearly positive that Deus is going to cause him to expire if given any amount of time alone with him.
“Please have a seat,” Valerie says.
August, Lex, and I take a seat but there’s not enough chairs for Deus, which I feel like was Valerie’s plan, seeing as the room generally has eight chairs.
“Valerie, I need a chair,” Deus says.
“You’re not part of this discussion. I don’t even understand why you’re here,” she says.
Deus will not be deterred as he turns invisible until I see the newcomer’s chair slowly being dragged over to me. Once it’s in place, Deus reappears and goes, “Oh? Chair for me? How kind, thank you,” and sits down.
Valerie is fuming and the newcomer’s face twitches a little more, but he remains quite professional. It’s impressive. Maybe it’s even his power.
Wyatt must have been watching from the doorway because he retrieves another chair, and even though Valerie is not pleased, she continues.
“Since we’re clearly dealing with someone whose power revolves around illusions, I’ve brought someone in who understands the workings of illusions in the hopes of helping us identify them. This is Ellison Grant. He works with Superheroes United dealing with legalities and such, but more importantly, he has the power to manipulate illusions.”
“Oh wow! You found the bad guy. Let’s waterboard him for information,” Deus says, looking delighted.
Ellison’s expression hardens even more. I’m pretty sure if Deus doesn’t watch out, Ellison is going to hand deliver him to the demons he likes so much.
“He isnotthe villain. He can make illusions only of himself,” Valerie explains.
“That seems ten times scarier,” I realize as the man scrutinizes each of us.
“Ellison, I will allow you to take over,” Valerie says.
He whips out a clipboard and clears his throat. “I am here to teach you the ins and outs of illusions…” He hesitates and then looks at each of us. “How are you planning on taking notes without anything to take notes with?”
“Oh! I apologize,” August says as he looks around, quite uncertain, before stealing Valerie’s tablet and looking primed and ready.
