“You going out to lunch with Kaspian?”

She freezes briefly before her eyes meet mine. “Yeah. Do you want to come?”

I shake my head. “I wasn’t looking for an invitation,” I say with a chuckle.

“I mean, it’s fine. It’s not a big deal. We’re not like dating or anything. I don’t know.” She huffs and rubs her palms over her pants. “Anyway.” She smiles at me. “You going out of town for the holidays?”

“Holidays?” I muse, stuck on her fidgety actions.

She gives me a weird look. “Christmas, New Year’s, you know, the holidays people typically spend with family.”

“Oh.” I force a chuckle. “I think I’ll stick around.”

“Really? No family get-togethers or anything? Won’t your parents miss you?”

I shift on my feet. “Uh, no, probably not. They have a lot going on right now with my dad, and they won’t be celebrating.”

Her eyes bulge and her hand covers her mouth. “Oh my god. I’m so sorry. I forgot. He’s sick or something, right?”

I nod my head, realizing I never mentioned what the family emergency was exactly. “Yeah.”

“God, I’m really on a roll lately.” Her cheeks redden. “You don’t think you should…you know, spend time with him?”

Shit.

“Mom requested a relaxing environment for him, so…” I leave it there and switch the attention back to her. “What about you? Your family still lives here, right?”

She pushes her hair behind her shoulder. “Yeah. Well, kind of. They live forty minutes away, but they’re gonna be in Mexico for Christmas. I’ll be with them on New Year’s Eve, so I’ll be spending time with friends before then.”

“That sounds nice.”

“Yeah. My girlfriends and I will be staying in a Sugarbush cabin.”

“Nice.”

The door pushes open and in walks Kaspian. Snowflakes cling to his black hoodie and coat the bottom of his boots. He removes his hood and spots us both, his lips pulling up higher on one side.

“Hey, guys.”

“Hey,” Willow chirps, standing from her desk.

I lift my chin in greeting and he eye fucks me in return.

“How is everyone?” he asks in a teasing tone, surveying both of us as he slides his hands into his pockets.

“Fine,” Willow answers quickly, scurrying around the desk without making eye-contact. “I’m going to go to the bathroom and then I’ll be ready.”

“Okay,” he replies.

“And you?” he asks me while Willow’s still making her way out of the room.

“Good. You?”

He takes a step closer, eyes flickering over my shoulder. “Can’t complain.” His face changes when she’s gone, his eyes lowering and a salacious smile forming on his sinful lips. “It’s too bad I can’t have you for lunch.”

“Can’t you?” I counter, arching a brow.

“Can I?” His head tilts and his brows lift.
