I force a tight grin. “You have plans. With Willow.” I leave the statement there, knowing he hears the question in the words.

“Indeed, I do.” I scrutinize him, waiting for more. He matches my silence for several seconds before he says, “Oh. Are you feeling a little envious?”

“Just as I said before, I’m curious. That’s all. What’s going on there?”

“Don’t worry. I’m being smart.”

He doesn’t give me time to reply before he’s right in front of me, his hand going to the back of my head while his tongue slides into my mouth.

It’s easy to get lost in Kaspian, but I realize we can’t get carried away here. Not now. So, I force myself to take a step back.

“Well, have fun,” I tell him, right before Willow returns with her jacket on.

“Okay, I’m ready.” She turns to face me as she stands next to Kaspian. “You sure you don’t want to come?”

She gazes at me with a muted panic in her eyes. I can’t tell if she’s trying to tell me she wants me to come or doesn’t want me anywhere near them. Willow appears to be nervous.

“I’m fine,” I say.

“You sure?” Kaspian asks this time. “We’re going to this place that has a really good tossed salad.”

I fight off my grin as Kaspian’s lips quirk.

I shake my head. “I need a little more than that. Thanks, though.”

He winks at me before turning and escorting Willow outside. She glances at me through the window as they walk off, something churning behind her eyes. I just don’t know what.

ChapterThirty

“Iheard she took off over problems with some guy, but somebody else said she had some personal family issues come up.”

I gaze up at Shevon after she drops off my plate and listen to some more gossip about a girl who left town.

“Wow,” I say, feigning interest.

“It’s been a few weeks now, I think. I’m not sure. But nobody’s heard a word from her. No social media posts or anything. Which is weird for young people these days, you know? Everybody wants everybody else to know what they’re doing, even if it’s bullshit—even if they’re at a funeral.”

“Yeah,” I say with a nod, shoveling food into my mouth.

“Anyway, I’ll be back to check on you soon.”

Before I can get two full minutes of peace to eat my food, I hear, “Hey, lover,” before Kaspian plops himself into the seat across from me.

I finish chewing my food and wipe my lips with a napkin. “What’re you doing here?”

“You’re here,” he says simply, shrugging his shoulders.

“And where’s Willow? How was your date yesterday?”

He laughs. “Date? I wouldn’t say that.”

“What do you talk about?”

“Different things. She asks about us quite a bit.”

“What do you mean?”

“She seems to be curious about the workings of our relationship.”
