He nods. “I have an event I have to go to, and I want you to come with me. Consider it part of the job.”

“What job?”

“I’m paying you for your time today to make up for the fact that you won’t be at The Blue Chip. Tomorrow, too.”

“Excuse me? I’m working for you tomorrow?”

He reaches into the inner pocket of his suit jacket and pulls out a thin cigar, placing it between his full and proportionate lips, all while keeping eye contact with me. He lights it, puts the lighter on the table, and takes an inhale before he speaks.

“Yes, you’re working for me again tomorrow.”

The way he says it is like he’s daring me to say otherwise. He’s clearly used to getting his way, and something about his tone and confidence makes me want to obey, even though everything in me wants to resist.

“What’s the event?” I ask.

“I have another business opening. I need a date.”

The laugh that escapes my throat comes without warning. I had no time to control myself. “I’m sorry,” I say. “But the idea that you need to pay me to be your date is crazy to me.”

“Why’s that?” he asks, leaning back and puffing on the cigar.

“Because you’re…well, you know.”

“No, please tell me what I am.”

I roll my eyes, my chest heating up as my heart works overtime. “Well, rich, in a position of power, attractive…”

I say the last one after a pause, like it was an afterthought, but really, it was the first thing I thought of.

He grins and sits up straight, his dark eyes staring at me. “You’ll need a dress.”

“What kind of dress?”

“It doesn’t matter. I’ll send you down to Vivenne’s and you can pick one out. Shoes, too. Whatever you need,” he says with a wave of his hand.

“Where am I supposed to get ready? One of the public bathrooms?”

He pulls out his phone. “Give me your number and I’ll text you a room number later.”

I hesitate briefly, but then I tell him my number and wonder what the hell I’m getting myself into.

Vicente stands up and makes a call while I remain in my chair and gaze up at him, enjoying the view.

“Vivenne, it’s Mr. Moreno. Yes. Good. I’m sending a woman down soon. She’s to get a dress, shoes, and whatever else she feels she needs. Charge me for everything. Her name is Mariella DeRosa.” He looks at me. “Sounds good. Thank you.”

Once he ends the call, he crooks two of his fingers at me. “Come here.” Like a trained puppy, I get up and round the table, stopping in front of him. “Go to the boutique and get what you need. I’ll message you soon about where you can change, and that’s also where I’ll pick you up.” He looks at his watch. “I have somewhere I need to be but I’ll be back in two hours.”

“Okay.”

He runs his finger across my cheekbone and down to my jaw, his eyes intense, the emotion behind them teetering between rage and lust. My heart throws itself against my ribcage as my breathing turns shallow. I’m both turned on and afraid.

“See you soon,” he says before turning away and strolling through the door, leaving me confused.

It’s not for another minute that I realize I never told him my last name, yet he knew it. What else does he know about me?

ChapterFive

Aloud knock at my door makes me jump. I hadn’t realized how much time had passed. I’ve been in this room for the last hour and a half. I took a shower, being very careful to not get my hair wet because I don’t have any products with me. Luckily, my natural curls have remained in place, and with a thin rubber band, I pull back a small section, splitting it into a half updo style.
