“Thank you, but apparently I’m not working.” I throw a look at Vicente. “And not getting paid,” I murmur.

“It’s no problem,” he answers. “Need anything else, boss?”

Vicente shakes his head. “I’ll be in Khalid’s office in ten minutes.”

“Okay.”

“You still need the shirt, even if you’re not working.”

“I’ll just go home and change.”

“No. You’ll be working for me.”

“What?” I exclaim.

“You said you needed to get paid, right? You’ll work for me today then.”

We maneuver through the casino floor until we get to a set of elevators. “Why am I able to work for you but I can’t work at the restaurant?”

He presses the button to take us up and just grins at me without answering.

When we exit the elevator after a silent ride, he takes a right and I follow him to a door that opens up to a meeting room. I expect to see other people inside, but it’s empty.

“What do I do?”

“You wait for me. I have a meeting. I’ll pick you up when I’m done.”

“That’s it?”

“You can change your shirt.”

“This is ridiculous.”

“Don’t try to leave. I’ll pay you for the time you spend waiting on me.”

He doesn’t give me time to respond, because after a quick glance at his watch, he walks through the door and closes it behind him.

I stand in the middle of the room for a couple minutes before I go to the door. It’s unlocked, which surprises me for some reason. I pop my head out into the hall and don’t hear any voices or noises. Am I the only one on this floor? Maybe I can just leave.

However, getting paid to just sit here and wait isn’t the worst job. How much will he pay me? Considering he left me a thousand dollar tip for almost nothing, I can’t deny the fact that it’ll probably be a good amount. I know people say money doesn’t buy happiness, but it does relieve some burdens, and I’d do just about anything to stress less about simply trying to live my life.

I close the door and quickly change my shirt before anybody decides to come in. After that, I sit in one of the roller chairs and spin around a few times before I look inside the desk in the corner. Boredom brings out my nosiness. Unfortunately, the desk is free of any personal items.

I text Autumn and let her know what happened, but it goes unread, so I decide to research Vicente Moreno some more.

I go down a rabbit hole of articles varying from discussing his business ventures with casinos, to the ones talking about his arrests and links to the Kinmore Crime Family.

I don’t know how long I’m on my phone, but eventually the door opens and Vicente strolls in.

“Nice to see you’re still here. I was almost sure you’d leave as soon as I did.”

I put my phone on the table and say, “I’m here.”

He pulls a chair out on the opposite side of the table, his eyes flickering to my phone screen that’s still on. I quickly press the power button, hating myself for not doing that before, because it was an article about him.

Vicente doesn’t mention it. “How’s your hand?”

I glance at it. “It’s fine.”
