"Someone was in the office, Opal. Your office has been ransacked. I mean, like the entire place has been ripped apart. It's like someone came in and fucking threw everything around."

A chill ran down her spine, and her stomach bottomed out. "Are you serious?"

"Yes! Your computer is busted. There are pieces of it all over your office. I called the cops, and they are looking around, but they can't tell what's even missing. You need to come down and explain what's gone."

She nodded, rushing back down the hallway to her bedroom. "All right, let me get changed, and I'll be right there."

She quickly ended the call and opened her closet. Just then, she heard Benton walk into the bedroom behind her.

"Is something wrong?"

"Yes, someone broke into my office. I need to go down and talk to some officers and see what's been taken."

"Do you want me to come with you?"

She turned, looking at him. She did, but she didn't. "No, it's fine. You can stay here. If you could just clean up the kitchen, that would be nice. I shouldn't be gone that long."

She grabbed some clothes and saw he was making a face. "Honestly, I'll only be gone for a little while. I'll be back before you have to leave."

She didn't want to leave, but she needed to. Her stomach was in her throat, and she felt like she was going to vomit. She quickly changed into whatever clothes she'd grabbed.

She hurried down the hallway, slipping her shoes on. She could feel Benton's eyes on her the entire time. She had the urge to have him come with her but pushed it down. She didn't want him to worry about whatever was going on. He had a tournament to win.

She turned and looked at him. He gave her a concerned expression that made her heartstrings hurt. To think, just moments ago, they had been making love.

She swallowed. "I'll call you when I get there."

He gave her a nod as she turned, hurrying outside the house and to her car. She hopped in and started it. Her mind was swimming.

What was taken from my office? What were they looking for? Who was in my office? Did they find what they wanted?

She couldn't calm her thoughts as she drove, and she felt her stomach twist once more. She didn't know what was waiting for her, but she knew it wasn't good.

She drove like a mad woman, unable to focus. She kept thinking about Benton's eyes when she left, and the gnawing thought that something was wrong.

She parked in the lot behind the building and jumped out of her car. She squeezed at her purse, her heart race picking up. Then she realized she wasn't hearing only her own footsteps. She was listening to another set. She slowed and turned to look over her shoulder.

And then everything went dark. She threw her hands up, trying to grab at her face, but a pair of hands pulled hers down, and she fumbled to keep her balance. Her shifter strength wasn’t enough to free her, and her tiger started to try to break free. But she forced it back.

She couldn’t shift out in the open in case there were humans watching. She’d be exposing the entire shifter community, and that would be devastating to the entire species. She’d have to wait until a better opportunity presented itself before she shredded the hell out of these fuckers.

She tasted something in her mouth and realized a bag had been yanked over her head. She was thrown backward, and her calves hit something. She tumbled back, smacking her head hard, and the world quickly faded away.

FIFTEEN

BENTON

He still had her face plastered in his mind. She looked completely distraught, and wherever she was going, something happened. He could feel it deep in his bones.

He didn't want her to go alone, and he wanted to help her with whatever was going on. But she didn't want him to help her. So, he remained in the house, watching her leave, staying exactly as she'd asked him to.

She may not want your help, but she may need your help, Benton. What if it was something really serious? His tiger pestered him about it.

Change of plans. She never said he wasn't allowed to leave. He found a loophole in her request. As she pulled out of the driveway, he stood at the window, counting the seconds it took for her to pull away.

He grabbed his jacket, yanking it on. He slipped on his shoes and opened the front door. He would have locked it had he known how.

He hopped on his bike and quickly headed down the road after her. He had to keep his distance, as he didn't want her to see him behind her.
