Benton carried everything into the living room and found Opal with an egg roll in her hand. “Don’t let me stop you. Fighting takes a lot out of us. I can’t even begin to understand how much food you need to replenish.”

Opal tore into the egg roll. It crunched, and the aroma of fried flour wrappers, cabbage, and pork wafted over to Benton.

He sat and placed a plate on Opal’s lap.

Then, he reached into the bag and pulled out an egg roll.

After they sat for a few moments chewing away, Benton turned to Opal and relaxed as the color began to perk back up in her face.

He served himself some Chinese vegetables and chicken lo mein and sat back on the couch. “You look better.” Benton slurped his noodles.

“Thanks,” she said. “I think I really just needed to get home and eat some food.”

Benton scooped food onto her plate and watched her devour it. He was surprised at how even the act of eating dinner could make him want to rip her clothes off. Benton shook his head and cleared his throat as the image of him burying his face between her legs fluttered through his thoughts.

“So, what you’re trying to do with the seniors is amazing. I never thought about what would happen to shifters when they got older and didn’t have a good pride or clan to take care of them.” Benton chewed thoughtfully. “I guess I should have, though.”

“What do you mean?” Opal asked as she continued to eat.

“Well … my mom raised me. My father was a deadbeat, and no one in our pride wanted to help us. She was a young widow with a newborn baby and didn’t have a supportive family.”

Thoughts of being kicked out of his pride darkened his mood.

“I guess it's why I don’t have such a high opinion of streaks in general. I mean, some families helped us for a short time, but nothing that would have gotten my mother on her feet.”

Opal leaned over and kissed Benton on the cheek. “I’m so sorry that happened to you,” she whispered. Her breath was warm against his skin and smelled of chicken and soy sauce.

Benton turned his head to face her and kissed her lips.

“Thank you. It helped me while I was growing up. I knew I couldn’t count on anyone. I learned how to do a lot of things on my own. It made me pretty resilient to anything.”

Benton sat forward and put his plate on the coffee table. “But now that I see what you do and how you care for the community, it’s making me think that we were just unlucky with a bad streak. You’re starting to show me that there are good people in the world.”

Opal placed her plate next to Benton’s.

“Thank you, that is so sweet of you to say.”

She slid closer to him and put her hands into his. “If we all took care of each other, the world would feel so much less frantic. We all, humans and shifters, have the same experiences. If we shared those things with one another, getting through the hard stuff would be easier.”

“Less judgment, less friction. More love …” Benton searched Opal’s delicate features.

When he pressed his lips to hers, they were without urgency. He tenderly kissed Opal's mouth and cupped her face to support her neck.

Opal kissed him back softly at first.

As their lips met over and over, their tongues began to mingle, and the chemistry between them heated.

Benton pulled Opal closer to him. He was mindful of how assertive he was as his mouth danced over Opal’s. His sexual desire grew stronger and more passionate. They kissed but did not banish the reality of what had happened to her today.

Benton broke from the kiss. “Is this okay? I don’t want to hurt you.”

Opal nodded and didn’t let a response slip from his mouth before she kissed him again. She climbed onto Benton’s lap and knelt over his hips. Benton ran his hands up her legs, over her jeans, and cupped her ass.

Opal gasped as he squeezed. She leaned over and kissed him more deeply. Her fingers found the buttons on his shirt, and she worked slowly to unbutton each one.

With every button undone, she began to brush the tips of her fingers over his skin, leaving a trail of electricity surging through his body and swelling his manhood.

This wasn’t about raw ecstasy.
