Mila looked skeptical at best. He threw his hands up in surrender, hoping she would take it as a gesture of good faith.

“I honestly don’t know what she could have been interested in. All I did was serve her on the plane. I just did my job.” Mila shrugged casually.

“Be that as it may, Gerri has a sense about people. It’s a special talent of hers, and she believed we were destined to meet. Her methods may seem strange, but she has never led me or anyone I know astray. I trust her judgment.”

Mila slowly nodded, still uncertain.

“Let’s get down to the interview process if you don’t mind,” Cyrus suggested.

“Please.” This seemed to calm Mila’s nerves slightly.

“Excellent. So I am sure that Gerri mentioned that I am looking for a personal assistant. My last assistant and I were very close as we spent a good deal of time together. My assistant would go with me just about everywhere I went.

“My previous assistant left quite suddenly, and I can’t really continue with my work without him. The job involves a good deal of administration work on a computer, as well as extensive travel, mostly flying.

“While Luca, who greeted you at the front door, has been helping with Miles’s tasks, he isn’t really what I need the most.”

“I see. I should meet those qualifications. I have been flying for several years, and I am fairly tech-savvy. Anything else?”

Cyrus grinned. She was sharp, which was very attractive in a woman.

“I have been working on a special project, and I was derailed by the loss of my assistant. Mind you, there was no foul play. He was a good friend of mine and a great guy: a family man with a wife and two kids. They meant the world to him. That was the reason he gave for leaving.” He shrugged.

Her eyes glittered with curiosity. “Okay. What kind of project would that be?”

“I don’t want to get into any specifics at this time. Details about the work can come later. I am much more interested in getting to know you, to see if we would get along in an environment where we will be spending a great deal of time together, usually in fairly confined quarters.”

We already know she is a good fit; she is ours. Meant to be our wife, his polar bear growled inside of his head.

Stay out of this. She doesn’t know anything about that. You’ll scare her off.

His polar bear was not happy, but he remained quiet.

“That seems all well and fine. I agree that it is important to have a strong professional relationship between a boss and his assistant. But just so you know, I haven’t quit my job as a flight attendant just yet. I had a break in my flights, but Gerri mentioned this would be a trial period, so I didn’t think I would be staying on long.”

NO! She has to stay, his polar bear raged. Cyrus squeezed his eyes closed to silence the beast.

She could be a huge distraction, pulling me away from the project. I have to focus. I don’t know if we can do that with her here,he admitted with a good share of sadness. He wanted to be on the side of his polar bear, but he was a practical man.

“Well, I would like to invite you to stay here in one of my guest rooms for as long as you would like. We could get to know each other a little better, and I could make an educated decision about the position. How does that sound?” Cyrus smiled gently at her.

She seemed unsure but ultimately agreed to stay a short while.

“May as well. After all, I have no scheduled flights, and I wanted a vacation.”

“Excellent. As I mentioned before, this is definitely the kind of place one would come to vacation. Please take advantage of the activities the town offers.”

He turned to his intercom and paged Luca to the room.

“Yes, sir. What may I do for you?”

“Luca, please show Ms. Dillon to one of our guest rooms so she might get comfortable.”

“Yes, of course.”

Cyrus turned to Mila once more.

“I apologize for sending you off, but I do have some work that needs attending. I look forward to speaking with you more if you would be so kind as to join me for dinner.”
